Bulls support men’s health round

-

The Gippsland Bulls Hockey Club was proud to be involved in Hockey Victoria’s men’s health round once again.

This year, Hockey Victoria partnered with beyondblue in recognition of the impact of mental health issues upon our communities, and the role that local sporting clubs can play in helping people who struggle with mental illnesses.

Last round all Bulls home teams wore blue socks, with proceeds from the sales going to beyondblue. Teams playing at home on the weekend were under 14s mixed, over 35s masters, and all men’s and women’s sides.

Men’s Health Week is an especially important time to put the spotlight on issues such as depression and suicide.

While these are significant social issues affecting both men and women, the suicide rate is four times as high for men as for women, resulting in an average of about five men a day losing their lives to suicide throughout Australia. Many of these occur in regional areas where suicide rates are much higher.

This was Hockey Victoria’s second men’s health round. For the 2016 men’s health round, the Bulls focused on the issues surrounding social violence.

If you are currently experiencing depression, anxiety, or any other mental health issues, please call beyondblue’s helpline on 1300 22 4636 to speak with a trained mental health professional, talk to a friend, or visit www.beyondblue.org.au for more options.
