All members were warmly welcomed to our meeting in June, along with guest speaker, Kevin McLaren, and Corrie Rutherford, Tess Livingstone and Barbara O’Brien.

Guest speaker Kevin McLaren, was from Victoria Police and is the Youth Resource Officer.

Kevin delivered the members a most informative presentation. He does an amazing job he does with the troubled youth in our area.

He has spent 27 working with “at risk” youth. Of course, the drug Ice is a huge problem due to the antisocial behaviour it causes in those who use it. Ice puts police, paramedics and hospital staff very much at risk.

Sadly, children as young as 10 are often the victims, along with family and friends, and are first introduced to the drug due to circumstances within the home or surroundings. The damage done to families is heartbreaking and hard to comprehend.

Glenys had the pleasure of presenting Dot Aberdeen with her 10-year service pin and Anne Keating and Narelle Waddell with their 20-year service pins. It was noted by the secretary that the club have sixteen 20-year members and ten 10-year members who are still active members. The club is very proud of that fact.

Important items such as zone lunches, social outings and the “all important” 29th birthday celebration (which is to be held on September 7 at the Warragul Country Club) were discussed.

The Bunnings barbecue on Sunday June 18 was a great success. Not only did the club make a good profit, but mmebers had an enjoyable day chatting to the public and fellow club members. It was therefore pleasing to note that the club have sufficient funds to forward a donation to The Smith Family Winter Appeal.

After the meeting the club held its trading table, which was a great success with most of the items sold.

The club would like to send its best wishes to those of our members who are presently experiencing illness and hoping for a speedy recovery for all.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday July 5 (6.30pm for 7pm) at the Warragul Country Club.

It will be “Christmas in July” and all members are asked to bring a $3 gift from the Op Shop.

Club 88

A very successful High Tea event held recently in Drouin and a members’ Cocktail Party enabled Club 88 to donate $2000 to Mawarra.

Mawarra administration manager John Ellams, attended the June board meeting to talk about the services provided by Mawarra and the new-look Mawarra Shop.

The cheque was then presented to John by Club 88 president and High Tea organiser Kaye Williams.

John expressed Mawarra’s sincere appreciation for Club 88’s help, explaining that the funds could be used for more shelving to help display stock in the shop.

He said the Mawarra Shop with its new paintwork, counter and floor has retained its character but has a completely new feel to it.

The club thanked Kaye Williams and Dawn Harper and their teams for organising these events and those who attended.

An important date coming up for all Red Cross people is the annual general meeting, to be held on Monday July 10 at the Fire Station, Gladstone Street Warragul.

All are welcome, arrive at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.

The Red Cross Shop urgently needs your donations of good quality clothing, linen, and bric-a-brac. Please take them to the shop during business hours. The shop also welcomes new volunteers.

At a recent shop meeting, two retirements were recognised. Evelyn Cole and Vera ReevesJones had both served 31 years from when the shop first began. Evelyn served every Tuesday, and Vera once a month. Their expertise will be missed.

Used stamps are still collected at the Red Cross shop and help to raise funds by on selling.

Branch fundraising continues with two barbeques raising money for general funds and an overseas project – disability in the Solomon Islands. A donation of $400 was gratefully received from the Warragul Lioness Club.

A wreath was laid on Anzac Day, and small trauma teddies are being knitted for shipment to Syria.

The emergency services team meet regularly in Moe and have responded to a house fire recently, and practised their catering skills by serving food at the emergency services training day at Blackwood Annexe.
