Black wins Garfield’s Cox Cup

-

From a zero degrees start to an absolute glorious sunny winter’s day.

That was more than enough to attract a large field of 96 starters on Saturday for the second round of the time honored Cox Cup, which was played in conjunction with the July monthly medal.

Peter Black was crowned the champion with a two round total of 134 made up of rounds of net 66 and 68.

Runners up was an in-form Peter McNeish with a score of 137, consisting of rounds of net 69 and 68. Finishing in third place was Craig Hunter with a total score of 138.

The finishing positions of the entire field are available for viewing on the clubs website or notice board.

It was also monthly medal day with the mercurial winning Tolly Baharis taking out another medal, this time on a count back, with a final score of 66 from an unlucky Peter Smith on the same score.

To cap off a brilliant day for the Baharis couple, Melissa Baharis won the women’s event, also on a count back, with a score of net 78 from Bernie Clark.

Captain Marty Atkins won the B grade event with a net score of 70 while the aforementioned Peter Smith took out victory for C grade.

Just the five players in total were able to play to their handicap or better for the day, proving that the prevailing heavy conditions continue to frustrate many a golfer. Even with a lift and clean then replace in exact position, this failed to assist the majority of the field.

A score of 72 or better was required to win a ball down the line.

Gary Bassett had his irons firing right on target this week as he scored the two nearest the pins on Saturday, as well as another two on the Thursday.

The club thanked those who assisted with the recent drainage works, which included the laying of new cross drains on the first, sixth, 17th and 18th holes as well as the laying of new pipes on the 13th.

Volunteers were hard at work, as well as the extensive machinery used with the end result; hopefully, that will alleviate previously wet winter areas.

Currently the club is offering a special membership deal for new members, which consists of a pay for 12 months membership and receive an extra three months as part of the deal. This offer remains in place until the Spetember 30. Phone the club for the details.

Thursday’s event was a case of “Lazarus has arisen”, as Peter Lazarus came in with a winning score of 35 points.
