Warragul Colts remain undefeated

-

Undefeated this season, the Warragul Colts women’s team travelled to Traralgon to play the Maroons in cool but sunny conditions for this time of year.

The Colts were looking to continue their run of wins for the 2017 season and were keen to get back into footy after a couple of week break.

The break showed in the Colts game, becoming scrappy at times, having the ball down their forward 50 for the majority of the first quarter, but only resulting in two goals, and again inaccurate kicking resulted in even more points.

A quarter time stern word from coach Jason Mitchell lifted the team for the second quarter, which gave the desired result and better kicking accuracy the Colts kicking four more goals and a half time lead of 41 points to nothing.

Traralgon had several their division one players in the side and flooded their back line in an attempt to stop the flow of goals.

It had no effect for the more impressive Colts side who still managed a further four goals.

A mix up gave Traralgon an easy chance at goal, giving them their only goal of the match. At the final change the Colts had a 62-point lead.

It was a matter of procedure for the last quarter and the Colts wasted no time in adding to the score to boost percentage.

Louie Patten booted five goals for the game, assisted by captain Sarah Elson who kicked four for the match and the Colts running out winners by 90 points.

The women will be looking forward to next week’s game against Morwell which will played at Eastern Park in Warragul at 1pm this Sunday for round nine.

Sadly Sunday’s game was the last game for American Baylee Hurtado, who is returning home to Colorado this week and will be a big out for the team going into the finals.

Final score - Traralgon 1-0 (6) to Colts 14-13 (97).

Colts Goals - Louie Patten 5, Sarah Elson 4, Sheree Wilsonand Breanna Pratt 2 each and Taryn Orgill 1.

Best - Stacey Poke, Taryn Orgill, Breanna Pratt, Bon Savage, Louie Patten and Sarah Elson.

The Warragul Colts Youth Girls also played this Sunday at Eastern Park against Newborough.

The two teams only met last weekend where the game resulted in a win for Newborough by two points in an incredibly low scoring game of three points to one.

The Colts were looking to improve this week on home turf and that’s exactly what they accomplished.

They were able to get the score on the board early, kicking two goals and giving them a handy lead going into the first break.

The Colts didn’t look back from there, some very good kicking hitting their target and the ability to get the ball down their forward from centre stoppage resulted in a big win for the Youth Girls by 43 points.

The Youth Girls will have a bye over the school holidays with Colts players Shaye Symes, Scarlett Wells and Channen Dare selected to play in the Youth Girls Interleague competition this week.

Final score - Colts 7-8 (50) to Newborough 1-1 (7)

Goals - Alicia Clerks 2, Shanara Notman 3, Shaye Symes and Jade Vogt 1 each.

Best - Taylor Dare, Shanara Notman, Imogen O’Dowd, Shaylee Wilson, Leesa Guastella.
