Bunyip scores historic first win

-

Bunyip won its first game of the season, defeating Koo wee rup in an upset that ejected the Demons from the West Gippsland football top five.

A second half lapse proved costly for Koo wee rup, the Demons’ performance again shadowed by an excellent half of football before falling away.

A return of seven behinds in the final term was also a telling blow, falling to the Bulldogs 6-13 (49) to 5-15 (45).

The Demons kicked out to a 12-point lead at half time in what was a low scoring affair, but had that lead evaporated and then some as the Bulldogs kicked four goals to one in a turnaround that gave them a 10-point lead at the final change.

The Demons attacked in the final term, but could only manage seven behinds for their efforts to fall four points short.

Curtis Jenkin, Nathan Lieshout, Zac Vansittart, Michael Whyte, Lachlan Petch and Aaron Gray helped deliver the first win for the Bulldogs.

Craig Dyker, Luke McMaster, Ryan Wilby, Nathan Voss, Troy Dolan and Gippsland Power listed Travis Bindley helped the Demons continue to push for the four points until the very end.

Bulldogs in five

Phillip Island propelled itself inside top five with victory over Garfield, 1013 (73) to 7-7 (49).

The Bulldogs gradually increased their lead throughout against a determined Stars side, turning a six-point quarter time advantage to 12-points at half time.

The Stars matched the Bulldogs in the third term, with each side booting three goals, before the Island finished off with three goals to two in the final term.

It was other results that saw the Bulldogs leap from outside the top five into fourth.

Steven Pimm booted three goals for the Island, while Brendan Kimber, Jarrod Andreatta, Mark Griffin, Rhett O’Hara, Jarrod Witnish and Jaymie Youle set up attacks.

Harley Lacunes, Jonathan Sauze, Tyson Payne, Tyler McDonald, Sam Batson and Tyler Hobson helped keep the Stars in the contest.

Cobras safe

Cora Lynn ensured its spot inside the top five was safe, easily disposing of Korumburra-Bena 21-18 (144) to 3-9 (27).

The Giants held the Cobras reasonably well in the first term, but the floodgates opened from there as the Cobras kicked away.

Seven goals to no score in the second term created a 65-point buffer at half time.

Four goals to two in the third term ensured the match was in the Cobras keeping before kicking away further in the final term, booting seven goals to one.

Ryan Gillis booted five goals, while Nathan Langley chipped in with three majors.

Nathan Gillis and Lochie Peluso led a group of a further four multiple goal scorers, while Heath Briggs, Chris Johnson and Jeremy Monckton were also prominent.

The Cobras used the opportunity against the competition cellar dwellars to blood some more young talent, and would have been pleased with Briggs’ ability to step up.

Ashley Snooks, Michael Cooke, Ben Fitzpatrick, Cameron Trewin, William Jeffs and Beau Anthony battled against the odds for Korumburra-Bena.

Goon fall

Nar Nar Goon’s winning streak came to an end, falling to ladder leaders Dalyston 11-6 (72) to 6-14 (50).

The Goon had worked hard with a strong run of form propelling it into the top five, only to fall back out following the loss to the Magpies.

The two sides were evenly matched in the first term, heading into the break locked at 1-3 apiece. A seven point lead to the Goon at the long break could have been greater had it been for a better return than 1-7 in the second term.

The Magpies then went on with it, booting six goals to one to open up a handy 26-point buffer at the final change.

The match petered out, both sides booting three goals in the final term.

Kainen Schrape and Brad Fisher were the multiple goal scorers for the Magpies, with Kyle Kirk, Tylah Osbaldeston, Dean Wylie, Michael Marotta, Rhys Harrop and Blake Harris also led the charge.

Tyler Payroli, Trent Armour, Toby Sherer, Matthew Stevens, Zac Stewart and Cooper Sheppard led a competitive effort by Nar Nar Goon.

Eagles team to beat

Inverloch-Kongwak re-established itself as one of the teams to beat, easily accounting for fellow hopefuls Kilcunda-Bass 18-11 (119) to 8-4 (52).

The Panthers led following a frenetic first term that saw six goals to four, but fell away badly from that point, registering only two more majors for the remainder of the match.

Kicking four goals to nil in the second term to take the lead, the Sea Eagles followed it up with 10 goals to two after the main change to comfortably run away with it.

Tom Bartholomew booted five goals, while William Hetherington chipped in with four majors. Clinton McCaughan, Dylan Clark, Andrew Soumilas and Corey Casey were also prominent.

Jason Wells and Taylor Gibson kicked the goals for the Panthers, finishing with four apiece.

Mitchell Witham, Dale Crawford, David Hutchinson, Codie Smith and Daniel Mock also helped the Panthers make a fast start.
