Match ups decide positions

There were a number of important match ups in the Mid Gippsland Football League on Saturday.

The ladder leaders Yallourn-Yallourn North were away to third on the ladder Trafalgar.

Fourth on the ladder Thorpdale were at home to Yinnar in the number two position, and fifth place Newborough were away to sixth on the ladder Mirboo North.

All games with the potential to change positions on the leader board by the end of the day. Boolarra v Hill End It was déjà vu again for the Demons with another poor performanc­e against Hill End and Boolarra’s 15th successive defeat this season.

The Hillsmen dominated all four quarters and were consistent in their play during each quarter.

This win is only Hill End’s third for the season. Final scores Boolarra 6-3 (39) to Hill End 16-13 (109).

Saunders added four more to his goal tally for Boolarra and Santo kicked six for Hill End to take top goal scorer honours.

Beamish was awarded best on for Boolarra and Cattanach best on for Hill End. Yarragon v Morwell East Yarragon struggled at home in their match up with the Hawks on Saturday.

Morwell East kept Yarragon to a goalless and pointless first quarter.

The second half of the game producing more goals for both teams but the Hawks turned up the heat to kick 15 goals by the end of the fourth term and had plenty of missed opportunit­ies.

A good win for the Hawks. Final scores Yarragon 6-3 (39) to Morwell East 15-13 (103).

Jolly kicked three goals for Yarragon and Barnes kicked five goals for Morwell East.

Egan took best on for Yarragon and Francis took the honours for Morwell East. Thorpdale v Yinnar It was a great start for Thorpdale’s clash with Yinnar, keeping the Magpies to a goalless and pointless first quarter and leading by 33 points.

Yinnar came back in the second quarter and held the Blues off from kicking any goals and only one point but still trailed by 11 points.

The third quarter was all Yinnar, who once again held off the Blues from getting anywhere near the forward line with their score remaining the same. Yinnar out in front for the first time.

Both teams worked hard in the final quarter to take it down to the wire, with 10 goals apiece and with only three points in it, Thorpdale pulled off a fantastic victory.

Final scores Thorpdale 10-11 (71) to Yinnar 10-8 (68).

Powell kicked five for Thorpdale to take top goal scorer and Geary and Famularo kicked two each for Yinnar.

Best on ground was Powell for Thorpdale and Raun for Yinnar. Mirboo North v Newborough The Tigers were playing catch up throughout their clash at home to Newborough.

Trailing from behind at the end of the first quarter, Newborough kept Mirboo North at bay to maintain their lead at the end of all four quarters.

Both teams had plenty of opportunit­ies at goal but the early advantage for the Bulldogs kept them in front and a much-needed win at this stage in the competitio­n to keep their finals contention alive.

Final scores Mirboo North 6-10 (46) to Newborough 9-12 (66).

Mayman and Wilson scored two goals each for Mirboo North and Mitchell kicked four for Newborough.

Mayman was given best on for Mirboo North and Philip took top spot for Newborough.
