Icy competitio­n ahead of finals

This round of the Warragul and District Junior Football League was frozen solid, icy competitio­n as teams aim to edge their way into the finals.

The children braved the cold snap and set off to play in some excitingly tight games. Warranor v Colts Under 10 Warranor played a very talented Colts side at Logan Park.

Warranor kicked long and straight in the first quarter, but Colts defensive play held them scoreless in the third.

The Colts played and tackled hard all game but Warranor had the size to get themselves a hard-fought win.

Ty Ward and Finn Sheehan celebrated 50 games. Under 12 The game was very scrappy but a good contest with players all committed.

As the frost lifted Warranor got their game on a bit more and ran out on top.

The Colts were very competitiv­e and never gave in until the final siren. Under 14 Warranor came out strong and worked hard to stay in front.

The Colts kept the pressure on the entire game but Warranor managed to come away with the win. Cobras v Neerim District Under 10 The footy was free flowing with both teams moving the ball well.

Neerim started the game by kicking the first goal.

The Cobras came back and kicked the next three goals to control the game.

The Cobras took their chances scoring four goals to run out winners in a well fought contest. Under 12 The Cobras got off to a flying start. The Cats held on and restricted the Cobras dominance but in the end the Cobras were the better team on the day. Under 14 Both teams played some great passages of football.

The Cobras scored early and continued to move the ball around the team using their scoring opportunit­ies and proving to be too strong for Neerim to take the win. Poowong-Loch v Jets Under 10 Both sides played extremely tough first three quarters with the scores locked at a goal apiece.

Drouin took the ascendency in the last quarter and ran out winners.

Poowong Loch were the first to the ball in the opening quarter but the Jets responded well and managed to get on top for the remainder of the game. Under 12 The Jets started slowly, but eventually worked their way into the game.

It was a muddy arm wrestle until the last quarter. Poowong Loch unable to hold on until the end. Hallora v Longwarry Under 10 There was lots of hard tackling and chasing but Hallora failed to score against a team-play orientated Longwarry.

The bigger Longwarry players came to the fore and Hallora’s second efforts were great. Hallora defended well for Longwarry to take their win. Under 12 It was a great effort from all players on such an icy morning,

Hallora who tried to fend off Longwarry couldn’t get them out of their attacking forward. The Crows chalked up a decent win on the scoreboard. Under 14 The game began well for both teams with the ball being shared equally between the two sides.

Hallora showed good team work to have a 23-point lead at half time which they maintained through to the end of the third quarter.

The final quarter saw Hallora and Longwarry play well but Hallora came away with a welldeserv­ed victory. Warragul Blues v Garfield Under 10 The first quarter was very even with the ball pinging between the two forward lines.

The game opened in the second quarter with the Blues capitalisi­ng on the scoreboard.

Garfield did their best to stop the Blues’ onslaught in the second half but the Blues’ slick ball movement saw them run out big winners. Under 12 A good contest between two of the higher placed teams.

Blues got off to a quick start but Garfield fought on hard to make the remainder of the game a tight struggle.

The Blues were able to maintain their lead to end up with a good win. Under 14 Great conditions kicked off the top of the table clash.

Garfield got off to a great start getting the score on the board. The Blues fought back after quarter time but were unable to claw their way back. Ellinbank v Yarragon Under 10 Yarragon took an early lead with a long goal because of an early push.

The second quarter opened with free-flowing play and an even contest.

A goal to Ellinbank in the third gave them the lead after an early behind. The teams were evenly matched with Ellinbank lucky to take the win. Under 12 Very evenly contested for the first half with both teams fighting hard in their backlines.

Yarragon had some good set plays resulting in two goals by half time. During the third quarter Ellinbank were attacking strong and scoring well.

The last quarter had a finals feeling, resulting in a draw. Under 14 It was a slow and steady start to a well contested game.

Yarragon had a strong back line that made it hard to score goals. Ellinbank consistent­ly scored throughout the game remaining victorious to the end. Bunyip v Caldermead­e Under 10 It was a great first quarter by both teams with great competitiv­e play.

Bunyip had the wind in the second quarter and scored well. The Cannons chased hard all day not giving up. Under 12 It was a fantastic four quarter effort by Bunyip against a gallant Caldermead­e, to register their highest score of the year. Bunyip were in control from start to finish. Under 14 Bunyip had the wind in the first quarter and once again couldn’t kick accurately.

Caldermead­e fought hard in the second but Bunyip started to kick through the big sticks. Bunyip ran away with the game in the last half to record a comfortabl­e win.
