Colts prevail on perfect surface

-

Heavy rains forced the Warragul Colts Junior Football Club to seek alternative grounds on the weekend for their Youth Girls and Women’s teams due to Eastern Park being too wet and unusable for football on Sunday.

Thanks to Drouin Football Netball Club, the Colts played on a near perfect surface at Drouin, with the Youth Girls starting at 11am against Newborough.

Both sides are top four and it was going to be a big test for the Colts girls going into finals.

The game was hard fought with the ball being contested fiercely by both sides but it was Newborough who got the upper hand, kicking two goals in the first quarter giving them the early lead in the game with the Colts unable to score.

Some good defensive football prevented the Newborough side from scoring any further and the game was a back and forth tussle to see who could advance in the game.

The Colts girls held their ground but eventually Newborough girls were too strong, adding a third goal to their total before the final siren sounded with Newborough winning by 21 points.

Final score - Colts 0.2-2 to Newborough 3.523.

Colts best - Channen Dare, Tyisha Baxter, Tyra White, Leesa Guastella, Shaylee Wilson and Jade Vogt.

The women were playing next, up against Red Hill in the round seven catch up game of the South East Women’s Women’s Football League.

The Colts were looking to continue their winning season as they sit on top of the league ladder.

The Colts were able to get the score early on Red Hill when Teagen Hume kicked a goal at the two and half minute mark of the first quarter. They never looked back from there with a further four goals against Red Hill, who were unable to get the ball much into their attacking 50.

The Colts held a 38-point lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was looking bad for the Red Hill girls with the Colts dominating, pushing the ball from the centre clearances and a Lynette Patten goal in the first 30 seconds looked ominous for Red Hill.

The Colts continued their domination on the field, kicking eight goals by seven different goal kickers, but to Red Hills credit they fought hard to push the football forward into the 50 and sheer determination were rewarded with a goal just before the siren sounded for half time.

With still a half a game of football to go, it was looking like the Colts were going to have another big win against a hapless Red Hill.

The Colts continued their in-form performance, booting another five goals for the third quarter. At times tensions on the field boiled over, resulting in a Red Hill send off.

The Colts inaccurate kicking played a big part in the score not being as big as it could have been, and a rain downpour in the final quarter helped the Red Hill side as the Colts could only manage three more goals in the final term to give them another big win of the season, this time by 131 points.

Next Sunday the Colts are playing Mornington at home before they play one of their biggest games of the year against thirdplace Tyabb away in what will be their biggest test of the season ahead of finals in August.

Final score: Colts 20-17 (137) to Red Hill 10 (6).
