De-sexing your male cat

-

From around the age of 4 months, kittens can reach sexual maturity and are therefore capable of breeding and producing kittens themselves.

While the responsibility for unwanted kitten litters is often placed at the paws of our female feline friends, we should never overlook the part played by their mischievous male mates.

It is accepted that most people do not have the time or desire to breed from their pet cat.

Furthermore, no responsible pet owner would deliberately choose to add to the number of unwanted cats and kittens that are already looking for homes, roaming free and impacting our environment.

It is equally accepted that neutering your cat not only prevents unwanted pregnancies occurring, but also can curb unwanted behavioural patterns associated with sexual maturity, can reduce the risk of certain diseases and helps protect our native animals.

No responsible Veterinarian or welfare organisation would suggest ignoring the benefits of having your female cat neutered, however, the benefits and simplicity of de-sexing your male cat should never be ignored.

Entire male cats have a strong tendency to roam, to be aggressive to other males, to fight and to mark their territory by spraying urine (often indoors!).

The aggressive behaviour puts an un-castrated male at a much higher risk of serious infectious disease such as FIV, which is transmitted through cat bites. One roaming male can cause a lot of mischief and leave many pregnant cats in his wake.

While any surgical procedure will have its own risk, the cat castration is minimally invasive.

At Baw Baw Paws we recommend having all male cats deserted as soon as possible.

To encourage male de-sexing, Baw Baw Paws will be running a dedicated ‘cat castration clinic’ on Wednesday the 6th of December, with special pricing and giveaways for every male cat de-sexed.
