Parking crackdown is a joke

-

Parking crackdown what a joke. One only has to walk through the shopping/commercial centres and if you don’t see at least one car parked illegally it’s unusual.

Most timed restrictions are posted Monday to Saturday (six days per week), 577 bookings in 10 months (as quoted) is only 2.2 vehicles per day.

Of course there’s more than time restrictions that can be enforced by council - loading zones, disabled parking, no stopping areas to name a few.

I have no doubt that if the figures are correct a good proportion of infringements issued will be for these offences.

One has to ask a number of questions “What are the officers doing with their time and what percentage is actually allocated to parking control?

More to the point if we now have to have a parking crackdown what have the directors, managers and supervisors actually been monitoring?

Is council fair dinkum about parking control or just going through this exercise to appease some traders over Christmas? What measures will be put in place to ensure compliance of restrictions in future.

Please council, don’t tell us it's another parking study by expensive consultants.

As for the agreements for parking restrictions on private property lapsing, why aren't councillors asking the CEO who was responsible for their management.

It’s not just a simple process of entering into an another agreement as suggested, if my understanding is correct there is also a legal process required to have the provisions of state legislation extended to cover the land before any infringement can be issued.

Finally, I would like to thank the council for telling us that we can disregard the restrictions on private land such as the Woolworths car park. – Just tell us which 18 bays to avoid.

I see little evidence that there will be any change following the election where only one candidate managed to get elected out of a field of nine who stood for four vacant positions.

We, the shareholders want a strong, accountable, transparent board, which is willing to answer questions and explain decisions. Several very good candidates stood for the election, but we do not know how many votes they received, nor do we know how many votes went to the existing chairman and secretary, who both lost their positions.

I look forward to seeing the minutes of this meeting in the near future.
