Top of the ladder clash

In a top of the ladder clash, Longwarry overcame Drouin in wintery conditions in division three on Saturday. Despite many lead changes across the rinks, Longwarry won by 30 shots.

Longwarry’s division six team also had a tight win over Drouin by just five shots.

Division three: Longwarry defeated Drouin (2) 113/83.

Mark Serong, Grant Pask, Ian Peterson and Russell White (skip) defeated Col Finger’s team 28/20.

Longwarry got off to a slow start and were down 0/9 by end five. Just before the break, Longwarry picked up a six to go into tea only three shots down. With some good leading by Magoo, Longwarry came out playing some great team bowls to get up by eight shots.

Elio Meggetto, Judy Eastwell, Kenneth Towt and Barry White (skip) defeated Noel Rubenstein’s team 25/24.

In a tight game with several lead changes, Longwarry got out to a seven-shot lead by end 20. Drouin stormed home, cutting Longwarry’s lead to just one by the end of the game.

Brian Hennessy, Eddy Bluck, Gerald Hoggwraugh­t and Ken White (skip) lost to David Tayles’ team 23/24.

In another rink where the lead changed several times, Drouin got home by one shot. Brian Hennessy again led well for Longwarry and won player of the day.

Glenn Pask, Lloyd Maisey, Hank Metselaar and Slim Eastwell (skip) defeated Graeme Woolsencro­ft’s team 37/15. The “D” team, as they are affectiona­tely known around the club, got off to a slow start. They were down by two shots at the break. Longwarry came out and dominated the second half of the game, winning 11 of the last 12 ends to win by 22 shots and be the best overall rink of the day.

Hank Metselaar was a stand out in a great team effort.

Division six: Longwarry (2) defeated Drouin (4) 50/45.

Lorna Sheedy, Laurel Purvis, Peter Smethurst and Gerry Wakefield (skip) defeated Peter Hone’s team 26/23.

In an even contest, scores were again level going into the last end. Longwarry managed to get three to win by that margin.

Reg Dunn, Ron Sutton, Fred Picher and Brian Mason (skip) defeated John Kinrade’s team 24/22.

In another very even game, Longwarry managed to keep Drouin at bay to scrape home by two shots and finish off a winning day for the club.
