Garfield claims big overall win

Garfield’s division two team had three wins and a draw at home against Warragul to claim a big overall win on Saturday.

The wet conditions resulted in a washout between Garfield and Moe in division five.

Division two: Garfield defeated Warragul (2) 109/66.

John Majkut’s team got away to a fast start, winning 11 of the first 12 ends. They went in at the break 24/1. Although Warragul tried hard, they were no match for Garfield who only lost four ends from there. Garfield had a great 39/7 win.

Steve Bassed’s team lost the first two ends. It was a tight game from there, with scores level four times. At the break, Garfield led by one. A five to Garfield on the 14th saw the scores blow out to 14/8. The good hard fought game continued with both teams winning five ends each from the 15th. Garfield kept its lead and won 23/16.

Tom Cleary’s team started slowly, down 1/12 on seventh. They won six of the next seven ends to be up 16/14 on the 14th. Both teams fought hard, Garfield winning six ends to Warragul’s five. It was all singles, except a two on the 17th. After a well-played game by both teams, Garfield’s comeback earned a 23/19 win.

Steve Whyte’s team was in yet another close game. The lead changing a few times with Garfield up by three on the 24th. However, Warragul got a three on the last to get up for a draw, 24/24. Results: John Majkut (skip), Alan White, Rod Hackett and Adrian Helmuth won 39/7 against Roy Hammond’s team. Steve Bassed (skip), Gary Payne, Ray Biffin and Colin Mills won 23/16 against Peter Wood’s team. Tom Cleary (skip), Shane Oliver, Rod James and Frank Prins won 23/19 against Bob Currie’s team. Steve Whyte (skip), Peter Lieshout, Stu Gemmill and Gary Helemore drew with Jim Moyle’s team 24/24.
