Marist cricket carnival begins

-

Marist Sion College will begin its Australian Marist Cricket Carnival campaign in Sydney tomorrow.

Marist Sion’s first 11 will play in Sydney suburb Campbelltown for the 45th annual carnival, with their first match against Melbourne school Marcellin Bulleen.

Other opponents for the carnival include Catholic College Sale, host school St Gregory’s Campbelltown, Marist Ashgrove and Newman College.

The seven-day long Marist Cricket Carnival is an elite level Secondary Schools Carnival where Marist Brothers founded colleges compete on an annual basis.

The boys get to indulge in their love of cricket and experience what it is to be a part of the Marist community as they are billeted with host families.

After being runners-up last year with nine topage boys, they look to the challenge of maintaining the high standards they have set in the past two years with a young developing team.

There is a strong representation of boys from several local Warragul District Cricket Association clubs.

The team for this year’s carnival is (with their local club name): Rhys George, captain (Neerim District), Alex McMillan, vice-captain (Western Park), Matthew Bow (Warragul), Eddie McGillivray (Jindivick), Tyler Constantine (Jindivick), Will Gown (Hallora), Patrick Mulqueen (Warragul), Will Robertson (Ellinbank), Jai Serong (Hallora), Oscar Sheehan (Western Park), Jake Stewart (Bunyip), Charlie Wans (Drouin), Daniel Whitten (Warragul).

Jacques Augustin will coach the side, with Dean Hendrikse team manager.

Marist Sion’s cricketers have been preparing for the carnival since September.

An initial squad of 25 players, which included a year seven to nine development squad, has been cut to a final squad of 13.

The squad were presented with their caps by former student Tim McGibney, who played in three Marist carnivals with the school, including one as vice-captain.

New players were capped for the first time, from player number 117 through to player number 124.
