Confusion over carpark

-

Confusion reigned after a local resident was told three-hour carparking limits behind the Old Shire Hall in Warragul were “unenforceable”.

However, just hours after Gazette inquiries to Baw Baw Shire Council, the Queen St carpark was inspected and one infringement notice issued.

Jan Cussen lodged a complaint with council after noting cars regularly utilising the carpark all day despite the three-hour limit. As a result, she said her yoga class customers were unable to secure parks.

In line with the current blitz on carparking, Ms Cussen contacted The Gazette in confusion after being told carpark signage was not compliant and therefore unenforceable.

“I just think it’s a joke,” she said. “There’s two signs that say three hour parking. I know that cars park there all day. It’s not enforceable?”

A council spokesperson said a compliance officer attended the location last week after a resident contacted council. However, the compliance officer was not certain the signage was compliant and sought clarification before undertaking enforcement action.

They said photographs of the entire site and signage were not on hand to make a determination at the time.

“It was confirmed that the signage is compliant, and officers attended and marked up the vehicles in the area, which resulted in one infringement being issued,” said a council spokesperson. “Council’s compliance officers are proactive in the parking enforcement space and the area will be patrolled regularly.”
