Revolting rubbish in Red Hill Creek

-

A Frankston woman has been fined $1903 for dumping rubbish in Red Hill Creek in the Neerim State Forest, southeast of Neerim South last year.

Forest Fire Management Victoria Latrobe District Manager Peter McEwan said there were about 12 bags of waste containing syringes, dye and cotton wool from a tattoo parlour, and a mattress “just dumped in the creek.”

“We were disgusted to find this rubbish in one of our beautiful State forest areas, but it was helpful that the woman had also left a parcel with her name and address on it, so we were able to follow up easily,” Mr McEwan said.

“We have also had a spate of portable road sign thefts and damage in the district recently, mainly in the Noojee and Neerim East State Forests.

“These signs are critical to ensure public safety on public land, letting people know that forest roads are closed due to bushfires, dangerous road conditions, planned burning operations, road works and tree hazards.

“We’re urging members of the public to help us watch out for any sort of vandalism in our State forests.

“If you see any irresponsible, suspicious or illegal behaviour in public land areas, please report it to Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning on 136 186.

“That information could include details on what, when and where it happened, the number of people and vehicles involved, registration numbers and photos if it’s safe to take them.”
