Special Holstein sale

-

Holstein breeders hope to hit the jackpot with a special sale to be held in Warragul on Friday night.

Holsteins Australia West Gippsland branch will host a “genetic jackpot sale” featuring 30 Holsteins from top international and Australian breeding lines.

Sale manager Mat Robertson of Lardner said the sale featured an outstanding line up of the highest quality Holstein females from highly scores young cows to heifers, each from exciting pedigrees representing the world’s best genetics.

The 30 lots are from breeders in West Gippsland, East Gippsland and Northern Victoria.

Mr Robertson said it was the first sale hosted by the branch since 2001. In the 1980s and 1990s, the branch held regular premier sales at the West Gippsland Arts Centre.

“West Gippsland has pretty much got all the top cow families in Australia.

“The 30 lots for sale are from leading Australian and international cow families,” he said.

Mr Robertson said the sale would feature heifers in calf or milking so that buyers did not have to wait for results.

The sale will be held at the Warragul showgrounds at 7pm.

Mr Robertson said the sale was organised to coincide with Saturday’s Warragul Shoe which is a Holstein feature show and will be hopefully well supported by Holstein breeders who may attend the sale and the show.

Ellinbank Cricket Club will be running a barbecue and selling drinks at the sale.

Market report for 21st and 22nd February Wednesday Fat Sale 322 head. Thursday Bull and Cow Sale 35 bulls, 303 cows.

Less numbers but better prices were the order of the day for this week’s Wednesday fat sale. Bullock numbers were similar to last week but better weights and condition saw a small gain. Heifer numbers jumped by 36 head and this saw the heifer pens fair the best on the day. Double the number of steers also saw for a good lift, and although vealer numbers were back, good quality pens held the better prices and this in turn resulted in a 13 cent rise in the average. This week’s yard average increased by 9 cents to 270.8. 7 bullocks topped at 256, up 8 and averaged 243.9, up 7. 41 heifers topped at 296.2 and averaged 259.9. 38 steers topped at 300, up 37 and averaged 257.2, up 27. 234 veal topped at 330, firm and averaged 280.6, up 13. Again there were similar numbers at the bull and cow sale in comparison to last week. The only difference was a noticeable easing in quality as conditions dictate. 35 bulls sold to a top of 234.6, back 13 cents and the average was 16 cents back at 198.2. Although cows topped at 250 cents up 28, the average overall was 8 cents easier at 168.6, with the lighter conditioned dairy pens slipping in price the most. This week’s yard average was back 4 cents to 175.1.
