The year 2017 came to a close in November with all members enjoying a meal at the Railway Hotel.

Members brought along non-perishable items for the annual collection by The Gazette for distributi­on amongst the needy of the area.

Home-made or hand-made Kris Kringle gifts were exchanged among the members who all wore their prettiest Christmas Bloom.

Warragul evening branch of the CWA enjoyed their first meeting for 2018 in the Bourke Street Park with a bring your own picnic dinner. The weather was pleasant and members did remember the Aeroguard.

Members had made a lot of suggestion­s for the new syllabus, which has been incorporat­ed for 2018 and hope it is an enjoyable year for us all.

Internatio­nal officer Dona gave her first report on new country of study – Peru. Her report made all realise how fortunate we are in Australia.

Some of the statistics she presented comparing Australia to Peru were : If you lived in Peru you would be : 36.84 per cent more likely to unemployed, earn 74.19 per cent less money, 94.51 per cent less on health care, 61.11 times more likely to be in prison, experience 58.75 per cent more of class divide and have 52.34 per cent more babies. These are certainly some sobering thoughts.

CWA will be holding several barbecues this year at Bunnings. Please come down and buy a sausage as the money raised is distribute­d back into the community.

Several members from the branch attended the annual Latrobe Valley group annual general meeting and group conference at Hillview Centre, Bunyip recently.

This year is the 90th birthday of the CWA and the group hope to be able to share the friendship of CWA with the wider community. If you are interested in joining, the group welcome women of all ages.

The group also have a membership for the young women of the area in junior membership. The group meet the third Tuesday of each month at CWA house, 95 Smith Street Warragul.

Local World Day of Prayer services will be held on Friday, March 2.

An article in last week’s Gazette incorrectl­y advised the event would be on March 9.

Since 1887, on or near the first Friday in March every year, millions of Christians have gathered worldwide to pray for the issues of family violence, child abuse, human traffickin­g, and other forms of injustice. In 2018 that prayerful support will be directed at the 540,000 inhabitant­s of the Republic of Suriname, on the north-eastern coast of South America.

The next meeting of the Warragul Arthritis Self Help Group will be held in Pettit Room 2, West Gippsland Healthcare Group Community Services Gladstone St, Warragul on Thursday March 1 at 1.30pm.

A speaker from Consumer Affairs will focus on scams.

The speaker for the February meeting was West Gippsland Hospital dietician Jen Pauw. Jen gave an overview of the Australian dietary guidelines and some myths about some alternativ­e medication­s.

A trip to the Mornington Peninsula is planned for Friday April 20. This will include morning tea, a visit to Arthur’s Seat and a ride on the Gondola, with lunch at the RSL Club in Dromana. Tickets for this trip are to be purchased by Tuesday, April 10.

The group will be celebratin­g Arthritis Awareness Week with a community barbecue at Rotary Park, Latrobe Street Warragul on Thursday April 5.

Warm water exercise classes in the hydrothera­py pool are held at Warragul Leisure Centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays. One class is held on Tuesday afternoons from 2pm to 2.30pm. One class is held on Thursday mornings from 9.30am to 10am.

The cost is $5 per class which includes tea/coffee and biscuits afterwards.

Nordic walking has commenced and is held on Wednesdays at the Warragul Bowling Club at 9.30am. For more informatio­n contact Don 5623 2165.

The group, classes and training of its leaders come under the auspices of MOVE muscle, bone and joint health.

There was a good attendance at the February meeting and a lot of flowering orchids for judging.

The guest speaker Andre Cleghorn spoke on the topic of using hormones in orchid growing. Another new member was also welcomed to the club.

The next meeting will be on March 1 at the Drouin Scout Hall, Victoria Street with the doors opening at 7pm and the formalitie­s beginning at 8pm. Hopefully lots of members will have an orchid to bring for judging on the night. Final details of the barbecue get together will be discussed as well.

The guest speaker is well known orchid grower and judge, Terry Poulton. Terry has a wealth of knowledge and experience which he shares with his audience in an easy way. He grows beautiful cymbidium orchids and is always up with the latest trends.
