Garfield win spot in grand final

Garfield had one win and one loss in Saturday’s preliminar­y finals at Yallourn.

In division six, Garfield’s oneshot win earnt a place in the division final whilst a 19-shot loss in division five ended the team’s season.

Division five: Garfield (2) lost to Traralgon RSL (3) 55/74.

Colin Mills’ team was 5/5 on the fourth but Traralgon RSL won next five to be up 12/5 on the ninth. Although Garfield tried hard, they were down 7/17 at the break. Even though the score did not show it, the game was tight with 14 ends decided by single shots. However, Garfield lost 15/29.

Bob Lamport’s team had a strong start, up 7/1 on the fifth. Traralgon RSL fought back and drew level at nine-all on the 12th. It was a tight game with scores level at 13-all on the 17th and 17-all on the 22nd. Garfield held on to win 20/18.

Charlie Borg’s team was level on the third before Traralgon RSL got up by two shots on the eighth. With scores level at the break, RSL came out fighting and won five of the next six ends to lead 25/14 on the 20th. Garfield won three of the last five ends but couldn’t catch their opponents, losing 20/27. Results: Colin Mills (skip), Graeme Burton, Jim Boucher and Ron Saunders lost to F. Metcalf’s team 15/29. Bob Lamport (skip), Malcom Newham, Don Knight and Wes Goodman won 20/18. Charlie Borg (skip), Helene Newton, Ken Newton and Cliff Stephen lost to D. McLare’s team 20/27.

Division six: Garfield (3) defeated Longwarry (2) 43/42.

Damian Brick’s team got a four on the first but scores were levelled at four-all on the fourth. Longwarry won the next six to see Garfield down 4/13 on the seventh and still down 12/17 at the break. It was a tight contest when play resumed, each team winning four of the next eight ends. Garfield, down 16/23 on the 22nd, got a four to reduce the margin to three but Longwarry won the last two ends. Garfield lost 20/26.

Judy Pocklingto­n’s team had a slow start, down by six shots on the third. They fought back, winning six ends to four to trail 10/11 on the 13th. Garfield lost three singles just after the break before winning the next seven ends to lead 23/14 on the 24th. In a good game with one team getting away early and the other coming home strong, Garfield won 23/16. Results: Damian Brick (skip), Isabel Deane, Alan Wilson and Phil Humphreys lost to Gerry Wakefield’s team 20/26. Judy Pocklingto­n (skip), Maureen Lamport, Joe Deane and Jill Rouse won against Brian Mason’s team 23/16.

After winning the “west division” final, Garfield (3) will now play Morwell Club (2) in the WGBD final at Trafalgar on Saturday.
