Luka leads fundraiser for Mat­tea

War­ragul bas­ket­baller Luka But­ters has raised more than $2700 for the fam­ily of Leon­gatha bas­ket­baller Mat­tea Ric­cardi fol­low­ing a car ac­ci­dent at Athlone.

The ac­ci­dent oc­curred whilst the Ric­cardi fam­ily was trav­el­ling home from the War­ragul Bas­ket­ball Tour­na­ment in Fe­bru­ary, with both Mat­tea and her brother Ju­lian se­ri­ously in­jured.

Un­der 14 player Luka But­ters de­cided to put col­lec­tion jars at lo­cal bas­ket­ball venues to help the Ric­cardi fam­ily.

With sup­port from lo­cal coach and ref­eree Shayne Cruwys, Luka ap­proached the War­ragul District Am­a­teur Bas­ket­ball As­so­ci­a­tion for their ap­proval. The as­so­ci­a­tion and seven lo­cal clubs de­cided to con­trib­ute, rais­ing $1700.

Luka, with the help of her lit­tle sis­ter Paige and un­der 12 player Jamie Chap­man, walked the courts dur­ing lo­cal games ask­ing for do­na­tions. They also went to the Sale and Trar­al­gon tour­na­ments as well as Satur­day morn­ing War­rior Hoops and un­der eight ses­sions. In to­tal, this raised $1023.05.

Luka, Paige, Jamie and Shayne went to the Leon­gatha Bas­ket­ball Club to present the $2723.05 raised. It was a very hum­bling ex­pe­ri­ence for all in­volved.

Mat­tea’s coach Kate Laf­ferty ex­pressed im­mense grat­i­tude for their ef­forts and in­formed ev­ery­one that Mat­tea was home for a few days and re­cov­er­ing well, de­spite her ex­ten­sive in­juries.
