Luka leads fundraiser for Mattea

-

Warragul basketballer Luka Butters has raised more than $2700 for the family of Leongatha basketballer Mattea Riccardi following a car accident at Athlone.

The accident occurred whilst the Riccardi family was travelling home from the Warragul Basketball Tournament in February, with both Mattea and her brother Julian seriously injured.

Under 14 player Luka Butters decided to put collection jars at local basketball venues to help the Riccardi family.

With support from local coach and referee Shayne Cruwys, Luka approached the Warragul District Amateur Basketball Association for their approval. The association and seven local clubs decided to contribute, raising $1700.

Luka, with the help of her little sister Paige and under 12 player Jamie Chapman, walked the courts during local games asking for donations. They also went to the Sale and Traralgon tournaments as well as Saturday morning Warrior Hoops and under eight sessions. In total, this raised $1023.05.

Luka, Paige, Jamie and Shayne went to the Leongatha Basketball Club to present the $2723.05 raised. It was a very humbling experience for all involved.

Mattea’s coach Kate Lafferty expressed immense gratitude for their efforts and informed everyone that Mattea was home for a few days and recovering well, despite her extensive injuries.
