Lyrebirds edge out Saints

-

Buln Buln held the edge over Nyora in the Reserves, coming from behind in the final quarter to win 3-6 (24) to 2-7 (19).

With scoring at a premium, the Saints held a narrow lead across the first three quarters but would have been ruing missed opportunities, posting 1-7 to Buln’s 1-4 to that point.

The Saints added a major in the final term, but the Lyrebirds produced two of their own to steal the four points.

Andrew Welfare, Reece Campbell, Paul Willis and Ashley Bridger were all influential as Buln Buln squared the ledger at 1-1. Tim Stoll and Sam Langford also pressed their claim for senior call up.

It was a far better result for Nyora, who were totally outplayed by the Cats in round one, but the Saints will still sense a missed opportunity.

Matthew Murtagh, Matt Layton, Ben Lineham, Aiden Cumberland, Daniel McDonald and James Harkess were the better players for the Saints.

Tigers accurate

Better accuracy helped Lang Lang overcome Neerim-Neerim South, 4-5 (29) to 1-7 (13).

The Tigers had been able to generate the most opportunities across the first three quarters of the match, leading 4-5 to just three behinds at the final change.

While the Cats kept the Tigers scoreless in the final term, they couldn’t complete their run home with missed opportunities, recording 1-4.

Hayden Laidlaw, Dylan Diehl, Eden Shephered, Callum Soutar and reigning league best and fairest Brendon Boulton led the Tigers to victory.

Eagles score high

Ellinbank reserves managed the conditions best, recording the highest score of the round to comfortably account for Nilma-Darnum 812 (60) to 2-2 (14).

The Eagles opened up a handy 23-point buffer at the long break and while the Bombers hit back with their second goal in the third term, the Eagles slammed through four final quarter goals to run away with it.

James Scammell was the most effective forward with four majors.

Three hundred plus gamers Kristian Bingham and Neale Parke showed they could still find the footy, with Chris Gardiner getting the better of the ruck duels. Ashley Scott and Jacob Walker were also among the better players.

Blues hang tough

Catani toughed it out to come home stronger and record victory over Poowong 2-9 (21) to 2-3 (15).

The Magpies led by three points at the final change but with goals at a premium, the Blues snuck one home in the final quarter to take the points.

Ryan Williams, Nicholas Cullen, Jarrod Shields, Alex Mapleson and William Temby helped the Blues get across the line.

Tristan Hawksworth, Nathan Bacon, Matthew Loughridge, Jake Cooper and Lachlan Bourne helped keep the Magpies in the contest, while Josh Chiavaroli staked his claim for a quick return to the senior side.

Dusties kick away

Warragul Industrials put the score on the board after a tight first quarter to shake off Longwarry, 6-10 (46) to 1-5 (11).

Trailing by two points at quarter time, the Dusties restricted the Crows to just two behinds for the remainder of the contest to run away with it.

Copping the brunt of the worst conditions of the day didn’t put a dampener on the home sides’ performance, with Scott Lindsay, Jackson Perry, Scott Blaney, Drew Davey, Joseph Murfet and Ayden Mills helping the Dusties take control.
