Garfield complete tournament

-

It was a big week of golf as the Garfield club hosted its annual tournament.

It consisted of a four ball on Wednesday, a single stableford event on Thursday, a rest day on Friday, and a stroke event on Saturday followed by a mixed event on Sunday.

The weather was glorious for the first two days of play, but it really turned sour on Saturday with competitors being pounded by wild winds with rain and hail.

Due to the adverse conditions a decision was made to reduce the holes played on Saturday with A grade and B grade playing 18 holes, while C grade was reduced to a nine-hole event.

The A grade scratch event was taken out by Gus McKillop on a count back with a score of 72, while Ryan Hammond won the handicap event , also with a score of 72.

Peter Glasscock won the B grade scratch event, also on a count back with a score of 84 and Greg Macklin won the handicap event, again on a count back, with a score of 71.

David Williams was the B grade handicap runners up with a score of 71.

Tolly Baharis won the C grade scratch event with a score of 41 while Daniel Hill won the handicap event with a score of 31.5.

Peter Johnson was the C grade handicap runners up with a score of 34.5.

The bad weather greatly impacted on the overall field sizes with 17 players taking part in A grade, 42 in B grade with 40 players taking up the challenge for the C grade event.

Wednesday’s four ball stableford event attracted a field of 19 pairs for the men, while 13 pairs of women took part.

John Richer and George Gray did best for the men’s event with a score of 49 points to win on a count back from Marty Atkins and Drouin guest Chris Hogan. Atkins and Hogan went around the front nine with a massive 28 points, so ended up being stiff to get beaten.

A big score of 47 points or better was needed to win a ball down the line.

Debbie Huyskens and Pakenham guest Kay Jones won the women’s event with a score of 42 points on a count back from Heather Payne and Chris Caig. A score of 41 points or better was required to win a ball down the line.

Thursday’s single stableford event attracted a field of 46 with Mick Neylan capping off a consistent summer/autumn period by winning the A grade event with a score of 38 points, just the one point in advance of Greg Needham.

Howlong guest Steve Kohut Senior won the B grade event with a huge score of 45 points, five points to the better of Terry McLaughlin in second place.

A final score of 36 points down to a count back was required to win a ball down the line. Next week is a game of single stableford. Vale Wally O’Hara The committee, members, staff and many friends mourn the death of Wally O’Hara, who died suddenly on Saturday evening.

Wally joined the club in 2012 and was a valued and dedicated member for the past six years, being a weekly competitor on both Thursdays and Saturdays.

Wally was a true gentleman and will be sadly missed by all that knew him. The club extends its deepest sympathy to the O’Hara family.
