Snapshot of the past

-

A photograph of Rob Dickson’s Menswear at 30 Smith St, Warragul c.1940.

On the left is Moran and Cato Grocers and on the right is J. A. McGilton Hardware in Williams St.

The T & G Insurance Company had offices upstairs.

Rob Dickson’s Menswear changed its name to Dicksons Menswear and now trades as Dicksons Mensland.

The business was started by Rob Dickson in 1930. After his death in 1963, Malcolm Dickson carried on the menswear shop until Phillip Dickson became the proprietor in 2006.

The fourth generation in Liam and Callum are also working in the business, making it the oldest business in Warragul owned and operated by the one family.

The T & G Insurance Company commenced business as Temperance and General Insurance. It was taken over by National Mutual Insurance and then by AMP Insurance.

The photograph shows a sign on the corner declaring Williams Street to be one-way on Thursdays which was market day.

Even though it was named Williams Street when it was widened in 1926, it is still often referred to as Williams Lane today.
