Lions claim their best scalp

-

Moe scored its first win for the season against another side in the Gippsland league “five” to keep alive a chance of making the top three and gaining a double chance in the finals.

The Lions won a terrific and high standard contest in the slippery conditions to upset the previous round’s giant killers, Sale, that had inflicted Maffra’s first defeat.

There was nothing in Saturday’s clash all game, Moe holding on to win by two points, 11-8 to 10-12.

The Lions’ Mitch Stanlake was outstanding again and should be polling well in the league’s best and fairest voting with ruckman Dylan Farrell and coach James Blaser also big factors in the result.

Sale retains third place on the ladder a game clear of Moe.

Leongatha (2nd) drew away from Traralgon (5th) in the final quarter to win 1212 to 7-5.

Josh Hopkins stepped up in the absence of Chris Dunne to be the Parrots’ top scorer with three goals with seven other players sharing the remaining nine goals.

Morwell registered its third win in emphatic style against Bairnsdale.

The Redlegs kicked the game’s first goal before Morwell slammed through seven for a match-winning 37-point break at quarter time.

The Tigers went on with the job to score 19-7 to 6-11 with Braydon McDonald kicking six goals.

Warragul has moved a game within 5th place after easily accounting for Wonthaggi.

The Gulls led 2-2 to 1-2 at quarter time and denied Wonthaggi another goal until the last quarter.

Final scores were 1013 to 3-5.

Maffra (top) as expected proved too strong for Drouin (bottom) at Maffra.

It was a hard slog in the second half as misty rain set in.

At the finish it was Maffra home 13-11 to 3-6.
