Gulls shine in wet weather
Warragul put in another strong display, this time against Wonthaggi Power, with two wins and a draw at Western Park on Saturday.
A grade: Warragul 46 def Wonthaggi Power 29.
The wet conditions did not phase the Gulls who hit the court ready to improve on their first performance against the Power.
Goaling duo Jaime Rollinson and Anna Green scored consistently to help the Gulls to a 14-goal lead at half-time.
The midcourt provided plenty of pressure down the court and adapted to many changes throughout the game. They picked up many loose balls and forced some poor passes, which the defenders capitalised on.
It was a brilliant team effort to take the win.
Awards: Alexandra Cole, Jaime Rollinson, Anna Green and Beck O’Halloran.
B grade: Warragul Wonthaggi Power 48.
The scores were relatively close all game, although Warragul held the lead.
The Gulls used the terrible weather to the best of their advantage, picking up loose balls and using Wonthaggi’s mistakes to create goals.
Both attackers and defenders played their roles and Warragul kept the lead up until the last few minutes of the game.
Despite their best efforts, it was the second drawn result in a row for the Gulls. 48 drew
Awards: Grace Cant and Grace Radford.
C grade: Warragul 35 Wonthaggi Power 48.
The team played some of its best netball for the season against a strong Wonthaggi unit.
Warragul’s first half was faultless, with the attack end combining beautifully. On the rare occasion that a goaler missed, the defenders were able to win the ball back. As a result, the Gulls stayed with Wonthaggi and entered the half-time break with scores level at at 20-all.
Unfortunately, Wonthaggi had a purple patch in the third quarter, scoring 10 unanswered goals. This ultimately proved to be the difference.
To Warragul’s credit, they didn’t drop their heads and played another great quarter in the last.
Taking plenty out of this game, the team will work on consistency and stringing together four quarters.
Awards: Hannah McKenzie, who has matured into a real leader, was named best on, followed closely by Claire Sandman with a brilliant game in the centre and goals.
Under 17: Warragul 15 Wonthaggi Power 44.
In a tough game, the Gulls started strong but couldn’t keep it up for the whole game.
The girls showed good leads through the court and a change in the shooter position with Abbey Van Rossum in. However, soft hands ended up letting the score blow out.
Awards: Abbey Van Rossum, Georgia lost to lost to Hams and Grace Radford.
Under 15: Warragul 34 defeated Wonthaggi Power 25.
The wet conditions didn’t seem to trouble the Gulls at all. The girls played for four full quarters, which was fantastic to see.
Olivia Sheehan and Bridie Mulqueen combined extremely well to give the team another win.
Emily Hobbs and Jaz Porch used their long arms to intercept many balls and Bella Hefford played another steadying game.
Defenders Jacinta Bagot and Zoe Phillips again worked well, and Laura Miller and Ella Weir were consistent when getting the ball down the court.
Awards: Olivia Sheehan, Bridie Mulqueen and Bella Hefford.
Under 13: Warragul 8 Wonthaggi Power 47.
After Wonthaggi turned on the winter weather when the Gulls ventured over the hills earlier in the season, the Gulls did their best to return the favour with conditions that would be expected at the snow.
The Power got off to a super start and maintained the higher ground throughout the game. The shivering Gulls fought right to the end of the game, however, the opposition was just more athletic.
Creative coaching from Green and Cole saw the girls move into new positions with positive results.
Awards: Tia Jenkins, Charlotte Bundle and Keely Pyle, with a special shout out to Lucy Williamson for her excellent work in a new position. lost to
