If diabetes were a country it would be the third largest in the world

Around 300,000 Victorians are living with diabetes and an estimated 500,000 Victorians are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In Victoria, 74 people develop diabetes every day.

Diabetes is a serious, progressive and complex condition, which can result in serious complications including heart attacks, stroke, anxiety and depression.

Diabetes can also be a silent killer. There are large numbers of people with silent, undiagnosed type 2 diabetes which may be damaging their bodies. The good news is approximately 58% of type 2 diabetes cases are preventable.

Simple lifestyle measures such as maintaining normal body weight, engaging in regular physical activity and healthy eating have been shown to be effective in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2.

Even if you have diabetes it can be managed to prevent complications through early detection and self-management education.

It is vital that those at risk see their GP for screening and advice.

For those with diabetes, regular contact with your diabetes team is vital to provide support, screening and self-management education. West Gippsland Medical Clinic has experienced GPs and a credentialed Diabetes Educator to assist you in achieving your health goals.
