Poowong streak comes to end

-

Poowong continued its strong form but it wasn’t quite enough to account for the reigning premier, falling short to the tune of seven points, 9-9 (63) to 8-8 (56).

The loss ended an impressive winning streak that has rocketed the Magpies into finals contention.

Entering the match yet to defeat a top four team, the Magpies fell just short of overcoming that test but did show they can match it with the better teams in the competition in an admirable effort.

The Blues kicked four goals to three in an entertaining opening to the match, and were able to hold a narrow lead in a match that was nip and tuck throughout.

The Blues simply couldn’t break clear of a determined Poowong team who have been riding a wave of confidence in recent weeks.

While the loss saw the Magpies drop out of the top five, they will consider the gallant effort played in conditions well-suited to their opponents as further validation of the belief that they could possibly play finals football this season.

After finishing at the bottom end of the ladder last season, it has been a remarkable turnaround under second year coach Mick Hawken.

Owen Fitzpatrick booted three goals, while the experience of Luke McFarlane also served the Blues well in a tight match. Aiden Cuff, Tim Lonsdale, Dylan Williams, Tom Keily and Jackson Caddy were also instrumental in helping the Blues hold on.

Jack Hazendonk and Trevor Hooker each booted three goals for Poowong, while Alex Doria, Chris Robinson, Thomas Wyatt, Jayden Sullivan and Joseph Bisognin also ensured the Magpies would take the contest down to the wire.
