Snapshot of the past

-

A photograph of Penny’s coaches awaiting passengers at the Warragul Railway Station c.1935.

The coach on the left was Warragul to Wonthaggi via Korumburra, Leongatha and Inverloch.

To the right is the the water pipe where the steam locomotives took on water.

The town of Warragul grew up around the train station. It has been a major influence on the survival, growth and prosperity of the town since the line opened in 1878.

A local resident has provided further information after reading last week’s Snapshot of the historic fuel depot facility in Normanby Street, Warragul.

His father, E. W. Jostlear, provided the brick work for the three tanks in the yards, of which only the smallest remains today.

They were built with rock lime mortar and the pumping station was red brick.

He said there was also an anti-aircraft gun erected under a net camouflage and an apple orchard opposite where the air force boys would indulge.

When the air force left at the end of the war, it was vacant for a few years before council purchased it. However, it was well used by local boys.

The boys would get under the fence and climb to the tops of tanks to play war games or use the pumping station as a boxing ring.
