Vic Country too good

-

A dominant first quarter set up VicCountry’s win over its metropolitan counterparts in the State community championship clash at Ballarat on Sunday.

The country side accounted for VicMetro 12-17 to 9-10 after opening a 5-9 to 2-1 lead by the quarter time break.

There was nothing between the sides for the rest of the match.

The Country side included Drouin ruckman Bob McCallum and Jason Briggs from Cora Lynn.

Briggs, also on VFL club Casey Demons’ list, has played seven games at Cora Lynn this year and on Sunday was one of Country’s goalkickers.

The metropolitan side also has some local country flavour to it

Former Warragul captain Chris Carey was named the side’s best on the day and also kicked a goal while ex-Drouin player Luke Duffy, a team mate at Drouin of McCallum for a couple of years, was also in the VicMetro line-up.

Carey and Duffy both now play for East Malvern.

Warragul at home on Sunday in its “local derby” against Drouin is one of three finals’ contenders that face danger games when Gippsland League’s split round 13 concludes next weekend.

Traralgon (5th) ahead of Warragul (6th) on percentage face sides that upset them in the early part of the season.

But both will be on home turf for next week’s return encounters.

Traralgon’s form has been up and down and another down against Wonthaggi could well see it out of the “five” and in the other match Sale, with a likely top three finish and finals’ double chance in its sights, also won’t need to be much below its best if it is to overcome Morwell.

?? ?? Bob McCallum, in action against Moe last month, will become the 7th player to reach 200 senior games with Drouin when he takes to field in next Sunday’s clash with Warragul.
