Strong interleague carnival

-

As this round hosted players from across Gippsland in the interleague carnival held in Sale, the Warragul and District Junior Football League had a bye.

The weekend concluded three days of thrilling play against teams from across the district including Sale, Central Gippsland, Southern Gippsland, Bairnsdale and Traralgon.

In the under 12s the WDJFL won all five matches and had a rematch of last year’s grand final when they again met Southern Gippsland.

Under the guidance of coach David Carpenter and his coaching staff Daniel Brown and Peter Fort as assistant coaches, Jeff Walsh as runner and Paul Osborne as team manager, WDJFL played four solid quarters of football in very cold, wet and windy conditions and were able to come out clear winners.

David has been hugely successful in securing two wins and two runners up in the past four seasons as under 12s interleague coach.

The WDJFL under 12 team were also proud to take out the code of conduct award.

The under 14s team played under coach Rob Reid in his third year at the helm.

They won two out of their five preliminary games.

Rob’s guidance along with assistant coaches Dean Alger and Geoff Cochrane, runner Peter Joyce and team manager Michael Ireland gave every opportunity, but the team were outsized and outplayed in a number of their games.

Although disappointed with the result, the player’s efforts should not go unrecognised.

Eight players will be nominated to play in an Allstars match on Sunday July 22 in Morwell as an opener to Gippsland Power match.

The number of families and spectators who travelled to Sale over the three days was a highlight, with more than 200 people attending a team dinner in Sale on the first night.

The support throughout the carnival was tremendous.

The Warragul and District Junior Football League thanked all officials, players and parents for their efforts over the three days.

The league also thanked all sponsors and the community for their generosity.

Special thanks was given to Nic Fogarty who took over from Rowan Fraser as interleague co-ordinator. Under 12 grand final results: Warragul and District Junior Football League 2-10 (22) defeated Southern Gippsland Junior Football Competition 0-0 (0).
