First round for finals

The weekend marked the first round of the Warragul and District Junior Football League’s finals series with the eliminatio­n and qualifying finals.

Eighteen teams across three different age groups battled it out to reach the next round of the series and maybe even make it to the grand final.

The semi finals will be held at Drouin Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

Under 10s

1st Eliminatio­n Final Drouin Gold v Warranor It was a fantastic contest between both Drouin Gold and Warranor, playing out a very even final.

It was an exciting final played in good spirits with Warranor coming from behind to take the lead by two points and take out the win. 2nd Eliminatio­n Final The Bulls v Drouin Maroon A great morning saw The Bulls take on Drouin Maroon at Eastern Park.

A tight few quarters saw the Bulls slowly build on the scoreboard while holding Maroon scoreless.

Inaccurate kicking by the Bulls kept Maroon close but in the final term, the Bulls took control of the game to run out easy winner. Qualifying Final Garfield v Caldermead­e It was a hard-fought game between the two teams.

Garfield were early leaders in first quarter with a nice goal.

Caldermead­e stepped up in the second, peppering the forward line with several minor scores.

The Garfield defence held and the teams started the second term dead even.

Caldermead­e pressed the attack in the third with some excellent marking skills and a fine goal.

Caldermead­e continued their magnificen­t run in the final term to finish well deserved winner.

Under 12s

1st Eliminatio­n Final The Bulls v Garfield The sun was shining at Drouin Recreation Reserve as The Bulls and Garfield kicked off the 2018 finals.

It was a tight first quarter with only a kick in it at the first break.

It was much the same for the second and the third quarter saw it open up a bit in the Bulls favour.

A great pressure and team effort saw the Bulls come away winners. 2nd Eliminatio­n Final Drouin Gold v Drouin Maroon As always it was a tight contest between the two Drouin teams.

Both Drouin teams played a hard tackling match where neither let the other have an easy contest and plenty of defensive play from both teams made for a spectacula­r game of footy.

Goals were hard to come by and after a very even match Drouin Gold came away with the win. Qualifying Final Warranor v Warragul Blues Today’s game was always going to be strong with the top two teams battling it out in the qualifying final.

The pressure was intense throughout the game with Blues starting to get on top in the second and third quarter.

Warranor fought hard but Blues were in control all day.

Warranor’s Joel Armstrong played his 50th game and Blues players Alex Tauru and Caleb McIntosh played their 50th game.

Under 14s

1st Eliminatio­n Final Warranor v Longwarry It was an unbelievab­le game played by both teams, with the match ebbing and flowing with only one point separating them at three-quarter-time.

In a nail biter game, Warranor came out strong in the last quarter holding off a hard fighting Longwarry to take the win. 2nd Eliminatio­n Final Garfield v Bunyip With both teams fighting for a spot in the next round of finals, Garfield got off to a good start and held the lead at quarter time.

Bunyip played good, strong, even footy and dominated the rest of the game, winning comfortabl­y in the end. Qualifying Final Drouin Gold v Warragul Blues It was dry and windy conditions at Drouin to kick off the final between Drouin Gold and Warragul Blues.

It was a tough game from the first bounce, with Gold getting the score on the board.

Blues fought back hard in a tense last quarter but couldn’t stop Drouin Gold.
