Baw Baw Sustainability Network’s community garden in Yarragon continues to go from strength to strength.

The initiative first started about 12 months ago in partnership with Fozigobble Café, which owns the land, with produce being donated to the café in return.

Anthea Merson of the Baw Baw Sustainability Network said a keen group of volunteers take the opportunity to tend to the garden while enjoying the outdoors each Wednesday morning.

“The garden group is a social, health and community venture,” she said.

“People volunteer and take on particular jobs, such as weeding.

“But there’s no fences or anything, so visitors are welcome 24 hours a day.

“We have seedlings for sale, which helps keep us running.”

Seedlings are produced in the community greenhouse, while the group also undertake aquaponics when not in the summer months.

The group also host re-skilling workshops with practical demonstrations and guest speakers.

“Our latest evening workshop focussed on three different techniques,” Ms Merson said.

“We covered espalier, weeding beds and soil fertility.”

People interested in volunteering can attend the garden program from 10am on Wednesdays.
