Warragul & Drouin Gazette

Too many typos

-

It was a pleasure to read the letter from Mary Hardwicke-Jones (Gaz 21/8) that paid tribute to the hard work of Malcolm and Jo Dickson who are two of the stalwarts behind the Warragul and District Historical Society.

There would be very few local volunteers who spend as much time and effort as they do for that Society.

Not so pleasing to read, however, was the bungled mess made by the Gazette’s editorial staff when they used large and bold print to make the heading of that letter “History lesson from Team Dixon”.

To mis-spell Malcolm and Jo’s family name is nothing less than disrespectful and reflects very poorly on the falling standards of our weekly rag.

“A simple and understandable mistake”, you might think, and I would most likely forgive such an error if this was a rare case. Sadly, this is not so.

I have lost count of the number of typographical and spelling errors that we are confronted with, week after week, many of which have been trivial, but I draw the line when it comes to identifying our locals by incorrect names. I will not waste time and precious column space by itemising some of the worst errors, but I will note one other horrible example.

On the front page of the Gazette (July 17), a large colour photo was published of “Centre Stage”, featuring the cast of the Warragul Youth Theatre’s show “Sleeping Beauty”.
