Eagles win premiership
Ellinbank were named premiers and champions after an 18-goal win over Catani in the F grade grand final.
The young Eagles finished the season undefeated. F grade: Ellinbank 24 defeated Catani 6. After a balmy early morning, the rain set in just in time for the beginning of the F grade grand final.
Ellinbank gave away a few quick turnovers but recovered to score the first goal.
A lot of stepping from both sides caused the ball to go up and down the court, with little impact on the scoreboard.
After a strong start by Ellinbank with the shooters working well, they led 9-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Ava McGarrity intercepted well in the midcourt for the Bankers, moving the ball nicely down the court to the attacking end.
Catani’s circle defence worked extremely hard and were rewarded with a few turnovers. As a result, Catani finally broke its scoring drought, but it was still Ellinbank 14–3 at half-time.
With EDNA best and fairest Ava Gaul and both equal runners-up Remy Ferguson and Ava McGarrity in the team, the undefeated Ellinbank was always going to be hard to match.
They were again off to a strong start in the third quarter, taking strong intercepts and extending the lead once again. They were up by 17 goals by the last change of ends.
Catani tightened its pressure through the midcourt, creating more turnovers. They scored the first three goals for the final term and kept Ellinbank from scoring until late in the quarter.
Despite their late run, Catani was unable to make significant impact on the margin and Ellinbank took the premiership with an 18-goal win.
