Market day for the community

-

Drouin Men’s Shed hope to continue carrying on their work raising money for community causes, with its biggest fundraiser for the year to be held on Sunday, November 18.

The Shed’s annual open day and market has been an annual event since 2014, initially starting as a fundraiser to extend on its facilities.

With the impressive facility now boasting everything from office, communal kitchen, storage space and workshop to go with hobby rooms with giant train set and computers, the event has shifted focus in recent years to benefit those in the community who need it the most.

“Now we tend to give it someone who needs the money,” event organiser Brian McRory said.

“Last year we donated to the renal unit at West Gippsland Hospital for a crash cart for the dialysis machine.

“We have a member here in renal failure who uses the dialysis unit, and that’s where he said the money was needed.”

The Drouin Men’s Shed has 110 members, and most have been busy in the workshop creating items to sell at the market.

Items for sale will include ornaments, clocks, homewares and wooden toys, while the Shed has also recently begun a project to create solar powered Christmas trees.

This year’s event will include a small car show with prizes, while entertainment will be provided the DiMS Trio, who are also members of the Men’s Shed.

There will be activities for the children including face painting, while the event will be well catered for with sausage sizzle and cold drinks, hot popcorn, fair floss and John’s famous Devonshire teas.

“Some might call it a giant garage sale,” Drouin Men’s Shed secretary David Mudge said.

“We’ll be raising funds for our next endeavour, so the more people who can come out the better it will be.”

The Men’s Shed has also begun fundraising for drought affected people in Trangie New South Wales and is open to donating some of its proceeds from the open day to that cause.

The Drouin Men’s Shed is open from Monday to Thursday from 9.30am until midday, while members also head out on outings from time to time. Prospective members will be made welcome.

The open and market day will be held on Sunday, November 18 at 27 McGlone Rd Drouin (the same site as Drouin Golf Club) from 10am until 2pm.
