Specialist school benefits from art

-

Warragul Specialist School will add a mini-basketball court with basketball ring to its play space after receiving proceeds from Warragul Rotary Club’s art show raffle.

Local artist Graeme Mirteza, who will hold an exhibition at Jindivick’s Red Tree Gallery in December, donated his painting titled Narracan Creek for the raffle, which sold out to raise $6500.

Having been selected as beneficiary, Warragul Specialist School also sold raffle tickets and ended up selling to the eventual prize winner Jan Ware.

Warragul Specialist School deputy principal Alesha Marshall said special projects had been put forward to the students, who ultimately decided on an additional basketball space. “Our school is growing so much,” she said. “Our middle and junior school had been alternating between basketball court and oval.

“The oval can be quite boring for the students, so we’re adding playground equipment onto the school oval and a mini basketball court with basketball ring to make it into a new play space.

“We put it to the students and this is what they wanted to see.

“Basketball is a popular sport here and now they can do it every day.”

Each year the Rotary Club select a community organisation to receive proceeds from its art show raffle. Mawarra was beneficiary from last year’s raffle.

Second prize winner was Janelle Moxey, while third prize was won by Betty Wells.
