Championship show for budgies

-

The Baw Baw Budgerigar Society has been busily finalising arrangements for its inaugural championship show.

The Society expect the show to feature about 400 birds with local exhibitors set to pit their prized birds against others from across the state.

The championship show, to be held at Warragul Exhibition Hall on Sunday, November 18 will see exhibitors vie for top prizes in champion, open, intermediate and beginner sections.

Baw Baw Budgerigar Society member Darren McFarlane said the club had come a long way since its inception two years ago.

The Society meet on the first Monday of the month and often engage guest speakers.

“The club has just hit 50 members, coming from the nine members that we originally had,” Mr McFarlane said.

“We’re very happy with the interest in birds and have a lot of juniors around. “For some it’s a family hobby. “We’re unique in that we cater for backyard breeders, a person that just has a budgie in their house to the exhibition breeder.

“Most other clubs just focus on the exhibition breeder.

“We educate people on not only breeding but just keeping the birds.”

The Baw Baw club competes three times each year. It recently finished third in the unbroken state championships and is looking forward to hosting its own championship event on the calendar.

Exhibition judges will look for size, length of feather, a broad head, conforming to variety and standards (for example, correct colour) with prizes for birds of each colour.

Mr McFarlane said sponsorship from local businesses had helped the Society in its ambition to host a championship show.

The Society hope to make the show an annual event.
