Iona crash in over 60s cricket

-

Iona has crashed in its bid to claim the Sportslander trophy over Warrandyte in over 60s cricket.

The two teams contest the trophy each time they play, regardless of it being a home and away or carnival match.

Iona encountered the strongest Warandyte team it had ever faced, crashing to an 84-run loss in the face of strong batting and bowling.

Warrandyte put in the most impressive effort Iona have seen this season, posting 7/181 with the bat.

Warrandyte set up the match with its two opening batsmen reaching 40.

Jon Martindale took two wickets in his first over to finish with 2/12 and provide some respite for the home side, but several contributions saw the visitor post a handy total.

Derek Burridge also picked up two wickets for Iona, with Basil Kehayas picking up one.

Peter Felstead took two catches, while Russell Ferguson took a catch and a stumping with the gloves.

Alby Matthews and Kehayas also took a catch.

Only Iona captain Bob Rogers could get going in reply, retiring on 22 as the home team crashed to 8/97.

Iona will host Bayside in a friendly match this weekend.

Carnival selection

Three Iona players have been selected for a cricket carnival to be played in Penrith, New South Wales.

Victoria will send seven teams to the carnival, with Iona players Russell Ferguson, Basil Kehayas and Peter Felstead making the cut.
