Garfield celebrate three-shot win

-

A thrilling away win was the highlight for Garfield Bowling Club during round six of WGBD on Saturday.

Division two: Garfield defeated Neerim District 98/95.

The side won the day with two teams up and two teams down. Unfortunately, in the heat of the celebration, the team cards were left behind at Neerim so individual team scores were unavailable.

Nonetheless, it was a good win to keep finals hopes alive.

The team now sit fifth on the ladder, out of the four by only half a game.

Division four: Garfield (2) lost to Yarragon 75/121.

Unfortunately, Yarragon was too strong on the day and Garfield lost on all rinks to go down overall by 46 shots.

The team of Colin Mills, Jim Boucher, Malcolm Newham and skip Graeme Burton struggled early, down by 13 shots before they scored. Thereafter they held their own, eventually losing by 13 shots, 18/31.

Adrian Helmuth, Barrie Smith, Gordon Moxey and skip Wes Goodman lost multiple shots on several ends and went down 16/34.

Barry Johnson’s team of Frank Prins, Brian Fox and Ray Biffin were in touch with the opposition for most of the day, just going down 20/25.

The team of Alan Wilson, Cliff Stevens, Don Knight and skip Kevin Donald were fighting a close one until the break. They fell away after that to lose 21/31. Another tough one for the side. Division six: Garfield (3) lost to Longwarry (2) 50/56. The side played at home against Longwarry. The team of Lex Taylor, Helene Newton, Isabel Deane and skip Judy Pocklington dominated their opponents all day, finishing up with a 25-shot win, 42/17.

The other team of Joe Deane, Phil Humphreys, Ken Newton, Helene Newton and skip Damian Brick did the complete opposite. They struggled all day against a very strong team before losing 8/39.

A rather upsetting incident occurred early in the game when Phil Humphreys had a nasty fall and had to be taken to hospital. The club wish him a speedy recovery.
