A Baw Baw Shire council worker on a ride-on lawn mower came to the rescue of a teenage boy being assaulted in Anderson St last week.

About five or six youths were surrounding the 17-year-old victim near the Warragul Bowling Club when the council worker on a ride-on mower drove at the group.

Police said the group of youths dispersed, allowing the victim to get away.

The incident occurred at 12.45pm when the victim was pursuing a male youth who had allegedly stolen his bicycle from the Warragul Leisure Centre.

Police said the bicycle was stolen from the entry to the leisure centre. Two witnesses told the victim they had seen a male near the bowling club with the bicycle.

Police said the victim was walking towards the bowling club when he saw a male riding his bicycle. An altercation developed between the two youths.

Police said the offender allegedly struck the victim and a group of males surrounded him while he was on the ground.

The victim suffered facial injuries and a bump to the head.

Police are seeking information from anyone who can assist with investigations. Anyone with information should contact Warragul Police (5622 7111).
