Iona fall in over 60s cricket

The rub of the green didn’t fall the way of Iona dur­ing their over 60s match against Casey-En­deav­our Hills.

Iona bat­ted first and lost early wick­ets through amaz­ing cir­cum­stances and bril­liant catches.

Russ Fer­gu­son went first after the ball trick­led onto the stumps from his leg.

StanHellings was run out back­ing up when the bowler dropped a caught and bowled chance, only to see the ball spill onto the wicket.

The rot con­tin­ued with tight bowl­ing and great catches, in­clud­ing a spec­tac­u­lar one­handed catch.

New player Tony Wy­att, who was play­ing his first game in 20 years, was wel­comed to the crease by the com­bine’s cap­tain in a nice ges­ture.

After 40 overs Iona had limped to 69 all out, with two with­drawals due to in­jury not help­ing the cause.

Sun­dries top scored with 12 and Wy­att made 11.

After lunch the com­bine bat­ted and although out­classed, Iona bowled and fielded man­fully. After the 40 overs the com­bine were 5/168. Iona wicket tak­ers were Peter Fel­stead (1/20), Fred Franks (1/20), Tony Wy­att (1/22) and Jon M,artin­dale (1/25) with one run out.

Iona’s player of the match was Tony Wy­att for his 11 runs, a wicket and a catch.

Iona trav­els to Churchill next Sun­day to take on the Gipp­s­land Goan­nas on a turf wicket.
