Mixed results in other GCL matches

It was mixed results for Warragul District Cricket Associatio­n in other grades of Gippsland Cricket League on Sunday.

While the under 18s weren’t able to take the field at Drouin, play was possible in the under 16s match at Western Park and for the women’s team at Traralgon.

The women’s team opened their one-day season with victory over Centrals, but the under 16 team suffered a loss to a strong Sale=Maffra side.

Choosing to bat first at Apex Park, Warragul’s women made a competitiv­e total of 5/117 off the back of a 73-run opening stand between Paula Borsato and Matilda Pollock. Cadence Walker finished unbeaten on 11. The Hot Shots were able to stifle the Centrals chase by taking wickets at regular intervals.

Despite Kerryn Doble making a late charge with an unbeaten 18, Centrals finished all out for 73 in the 35th over.

All bowlers chipped in with good control, but it was Hayley De Graaf (2/4 from six overs), Emma Atherton (2/10) and Alice Horsburgh (2/14) who led the way.

ErinMacFar­lane was also economical, conceding just one run from four overs while also taking a wicket.

Meanwhile, Sale-Maffra were far too strong for the under 16 team.

Jai Serong (28), Liam Lenders (23) and Patrick Ireland (21*) helped fight back after the loss of early wickets, but the Wild Dogs still struggled through their 50 overs to finish 7/131.

With weather threatenin­g Sale-Maffra got moving to chase down the required total in just 27 overs, Tom Morrison leading the charge with an unbeaten 75.

Jai Serong induced an edge through to Chris Diston, while Nicholas Caddy and Liam O’Connor combined for a run out.

In other matches, Traralgon District defeated Leongatha District while the match between Latrobe Valley and Bairnsdale was abandoned.
