Marist Sion finish runner up
Marist Sion College Warragul’s year eight cricket team has finished runner up in School Sport Victoria state cricket.
Aided by the coaching of Mr Jacques Augustin, the year eight team advanced to the state finals at Macleay Park in Balwyn North having defeated Koo wee rup in the quarter finals.
The semi final was first up in the morning and that was played against Saint Mary’s of the Angels, Shepparton.
Marist Sion won the toss and chose to bat first.
Rhys Galvin did most of the damage with the bat, top scoring with 43 and the team ended up being bowled out for 93 in the last over of the innings.
Having to defend a relatively small total, Marist Sion were aided by the bowling of Patrick Ireland 2/8 off 3.3 overs, Rhys Galvin 2/8 off four overs and Bryce Joyce 2/5 off one over. The tram managed to bowl Saint Mary’s of the Angels out for 77 in the last over in a fantastic all-round team performance in the field.
The state final would be played against Emmanuel College from Warrnambool.
Captain Liam Serong won the toss again and chose to bat first.
Liam Serong top scored with 33 and Nathan Whitten and Thomas Wans put on a handy 19 runs for the last wicket to help the team end on 9/96 after the allotted 20 overs.
With having to defend another small total, Marist Sion got off to a great start having Emmanuel College at 5/55 after 13 overs.
Great bowling performances of Fintan Fox with 2/21 off four overs, Thomas Wans with 2/18 off three and the economical Patrick Ireland with 0/8 off three overs, alongside the great fielding performance of Bryce Joyce with four catches, just wasn’t enough in the end with the total being chased down in the 19th over.
