Fairy tale run continues for Neerim

Neerim District had two wins in Saturday pennant with both teams sitting inside the “top four”.

The division two side had a solid win whilst the division five side continued its fairy tale run.

Division two: Neerim District defeated Warragul (2) 100/86.

With the division two competitio­n very tight this year and every game tough to win, Neerim District is taking no game for granted.

Peter Throup (skip), Peter Brooks, Gerry Engelstad and Colin McKay lost to David Smith’s team 20/26.

Neerim got off to a great start, seven up after three ends, before times got tough. After leading 10/6 on the seventh end, Neerim lost the next eight ends and trailed by 11 shots.

Neerim fought back with mainly ones, however, managed to win seven of the next eight ends to trail by two on the 23rd end.

Warragul steadied, picking up four shots on the last two ends to win by six shots.

Neil Adams (skip), Trevor Kuhnell, Tony Thornton and Karen Sheers drew with Peter Woods’ team 22-all.

Neerim got off to a poor start, down 0/9 after five ends. They finally got moving, winning seven of the next nine ends to tie at 12-all.

Warragul won five ends but only managed to pick up ones. Neerim trailed by seven on the 20th end but picked up eight shots to Warragul’s one shot over the last five ends to tie the scores.

Ray Watts (skip), Jim Fallon, Rob Cook and Wes Ellis defeated David Gatewood’s team 29/17.

Scoring was tight over the first six ends, with Neerim leading 5/4 before Warragul picked up seven shots over three ends to lead by six.

Warragul still led by six at the 16th end. In an incredible turn around, Neerim won the last nine ends - including a five - to take the win.

Angus McGillivra­y (skip), Pat Fraser-Aurisch, Chris Hogan and Julie Adams defeated Jim Moyle’s team 29/21.

Neerim had a solid start and a 12-shot lead by the 10th end. Warragul recovered, winning the next six ends to cut the margin to one.

Warragul hit the front with a four on the 18th end. Neerim countered strongly, winning five of the last seven ends and picking up 12 shots.

Division five: Neerim District (2) defeated Traralgon RSL (3) 96/35.

After losing the first two games of the season, Neerim’s fairy tale run continued.

The team has now won its last six games to consolidat­e second spot on the ladder, just four points off top spot.

Tom Goodwin (skip), Gerald Winter, George Rymer and Steve Halligan defeated D. McClare’s team 29/15.

Neerim came out firing and steadily accumulate­d shots while only conceding occasional ones. They had a 14-shot lead after 13 ends and 17-shot lead after 16 ends.

RSL won the last three ends, picking up five shots, but Neerim was 14-shot winners.

Russell Meehan (skip), Jim Schroeder, Cookie Halligan and John Rochford defeated A. Jones’ team 41/7.

Scoring was close early on, four-all after six ends. Neerim started to get on top but were picking up just ones and twos for a lead of nine on the 16th end.

The avalanche started as Neerim only conceding one shot over the next nine ends but picked up a five, three fours and two threes amongst others to win by 34 shots.

Bruce Mironow (skip), Billie Cook, Thelma Schroeder and Greg Bond defeated F. Metcalf’s team 26/13.

Neerim started solidly, winning nine of the first 13 ends to lead by 10 shots. Continuing to win most ends, a three and then a two on the 23rd end had the lead out to 15.

RSL reclaimed five shots before Neerim got a one on the last end to win by 13 shots.

After a disappoint­ing round six, Neerim District put in a good performanc­e at home against Newborough. Division one: Neerim Newborough 50/69. Liz Hodge (skip), Di Tame, Russell Meehan and Neville Cousins lost to L. Steel’s team 17/33. District lost to

Neerim started well with scores level on the fifth. They dropped seven shots over the next two ends before fighting back to hit the front on the 12th end.

After leading by one on the 15th end, Neerim fell away and only won one more end with heavy losses along the way - including a seven on the last end.

Karen Sheers (skip), Marion Willis, Gerry Engelstad and Steve Halligan defeated J. Goldie’s team 17/16.

Neerim got off to a flyer and were seven before the opposition scored. Newborough fought back and levelled the scores on the 12th end.

Scoring was very tight with Newborough one up on the 19th end. Neerim got a three on the penultimat­e end to go two up. They dropped one on the last end but won by one shot.

Thelma Schroeder (skip), Cookie Halligan, Kay Cousins and John Rochford lost to D. Kennedy’s team 16/20.

Neerim had a bad start, dropping a five on the second end. To their credit, a fightback was staged and scores level on the ninth end.

Newborough kicked ahead over the next six ends, picking up 10 shots to Neerim’s one. Neerim won five of the last six ends to cut the final margin to four shots in a good performanc­e.
