Crushing win for Western Park

-

Jagoe was at his hard-hitting best, hitting four towering sixes on his way to a brilliant 77 as the pair added 128 runs for the fifth wicket to put Buln well on top.

Max Kelly (21) provided a brief cameo at the end, while Matt Kelliher (2-44) and Aaron Fawcett (2-47) battled hard against top-class batting.

With a score of 8-230 to chase down, Neerim were after a positive start after the break and their two best batsmen- Jack Ward and Nathan Bayne provided just that.

Both easily saw of the new ball and then gave themselves an opportunity to chase the target, adding 72 before Bayne (34) fell to Monahan (3-26).

Jack Ward (49) soon fell leg before wicket to Buln’s coach and things crumbled from there as wickets to Ryan Bishop (3-48) and Max Kelly (228) severely stemmed the flow of runs.

The collapse continued to 8-136 in the latter stages.

Dane Fawcett (26) provided a spark late, however it was to no avail as Neerim fell to 170 all out.

Drouin scrape home

Ellinbank 6/214 def by Drouin 7/215 Ellinbank’s unbeaten start to the season has ended as Drouin scraped by the ladder-leaders in a final ball thriller at Ellinbank.

Winning the toss and batting on a glorious day to make runs, the Eagles obliged as Matt Farthing continued his fine form, adding 83 for the first wicket with Ben Spicer before falling for 38. \

This brought Nick Fairbank to the crease and he and Spicer continued their surreal form, adding a further 91 with a plethora of boundaries and sixes as the Drouin bowlers had no answer.

Fairbank eventually fell for 45, however Spicer was in outrageous form, at times seeming invincible as he got through the nervous 90s on his way to a brilliant 102.

He certainly led from the front, as Ellinbank amassed a very defendable 6-214 off their allotted overs.

However, this score may have been larger if not for Brad Glover (2-32) who was effective at the death.

Drouin seemingly needed a strong start to chase this total however Nathan Pulham (2-35) struck early, and left the Hawks stuttering on 3-33.

Sam Wyatt and Trevor Gardiner were left with the salvage mission.

With Wyatt slightly out of form, and Gardiner returning from injury. it seemed like a difficult task as the required run rate put suffocating pressure on the pair.

However both were up to the task as they limited dot balls and struck towering blows on their way to a matchaltering 125 run partnership before Wyatt fell for a terrific 78.

Gardiner fell soon after for 46, and Luke Rogers (3-40) took two more to leave Drouin seven down and still 30 short.

Jake Harper (27*) and Dale Weller (7*) had experience on their side however and with a run off the last ball needed, they did the job to retrieve one of Drouin’s finest victories.

Panthers in upset

Yarragon4/221 def Hallora 9/211 A weekend of batting feasts and fantastic games in the league’s top division was capped off with a sensational upset by the improved Yarragon against Hallora at home as Nuwan Perera played one of the finest individual matches possible.

Batting first, Yarragon were able to set the tone for the run-fest coming with a strong opening stand of 55 between Perera and Brock Glover (15) before Grant Duncan struck.

This brought Gayan De Silva to the crease and with Perera, attacked a Hallora bowling attack which was struggling to penetrate.

The pair rapidly brought the score up to 165 before De Silva was bowled by Fraser Duncan.

However Perera soon reached his hundred and Gamini Kumara (28) increased the scoring to take any momentum away from the Kangas.

Duncan claimed another to take figures of 2-26, however the innings belonged to Perera, who made a magnificent 116* which only included six fours, showing his capability to score at will in any situation.

The Panthers reached 4-221, an ominous total for Hallora to chase.

The early loss of Dave Macdermid (7) put the away side on the back foot until Sam Whibley (36) and James Vela (59) combined to put pressure on the Yarragon bowling line-up.

The pair set the tone for the middle order, who were able to continue to push the scoring along with the likes of Fraser Duncan (32) and Jai Newcombe (16) contributing to the cause.

However when the overs remaining began to dwindle one man took over the game.

After his century in the first innings, Perera wasn’t keen on adding a loss to the day as his experience shone through, snuffing out multiple dangerous batsmen on his way to 5-42 as Hallora fell devastatingly short, batting their overs to finish 9-211 as the Panthers celebrated a nail-biting 10run victory.
