Iona hosts Goannas in over 60s

-

Iona unexpectedly turned host for their over 60s cricket match against Gippsland Goannas as Churchill’s turf wicket was deemed unfit for play.

Storms overnight had blown the covers off the pitch at Chruchill, making the bowler run up unsafe.

Urgent phone calls between captains Ian Gibson and Russell Ferguson resulted in a game being completed on the excellent Iona ground with minimal time lost to rain. Ferguson won the toss and batted. Iona were 1/60 but then lost four wickets for two runs on the way to being bowled out for 92.

The Gippsland Goannas batted well in reply, losing their first wicket at 77.

Despite losing four wickets for 10 runs, the Goannas pressed on to 4/141 when rain stopped play in the 35ht over.

Iona’s wicket takers were Peter Felstead with two with singles to Jon Martindale and first gamer JimRowley, who was playing his first game in 20 years.

The best of the batters were Ferguson with 17, Jeff Phillips 23, second gamer Bob Thomas 14 and Fijian import Fili Asa Leausa 16.

Phillips was awarded man of the match for Iona.

Iona’s next two games will be away matches to Seville and Yarra Valley.
