Final round of croquet today

Warragul Croquet Club travelled to Phillip Island for golf pennant.

After defeating third-placed Wonthaggi 2 last round, Warragul were looking to take it up to Phillip Island who were sitting second.

However things didn’t start well for the visitor, losing five of the eight singles matches.

Phillip Island continued their dominance in the doubles, winning four of the six games. Results: Singles: Colin Walker (handicap five) lost to Pat Wilsmore (five) 4/7, Tony Butterwort­h defeated Grant Wadeson (eight) 7/3, Paul Simmons (eight) defeated Mike Bailey (eight) 7/4, Mary Cornwall (nine) lost to Lily Eichstadt (10) 2/7, M Cornwall defeated M Bailey 7/6, P Simmons lost to L Eichstadt 4/7, C Walker lost to G Wadeson 2/7, T Butterwort­h lost to P Wilsmore 2/7.

Doubles: C Walker/T Butterwort­h lost to P Wilsmore/G Wadeson 5/7, P Simmons/M Cornwall lost to M Bailey/L Eichstadt 6/7, T Butterwort­h/M Cornwall defeated G Wadeson/L Eichstadt 7/4, C Walker/P Simmons lost to P Wilsmore/M Bailey 7/5, C Walker/M Cornwall lost to P Wilsmore/L Eichstadt 4/7, T Butterwort­h/P Simmons defeated G Wadeson/M Bailey 7/3.

Phillip Island won comfortabl­y, nine games to five, 83 hoops to 69. Warragul travel to Leongatha for the final round of pennant today.

Drouin conclude season

Drouin’s Associatio­n croquet pennant team completed the season with a great win when it played Bairnsdale on neutral ground at Morwell on Thursday.

Allan Leesing (handicap nine) continued his good form in winning the first singles against Bairnsdale’s Gary Prescott (handicap 16) 2312.

Jenny Leesing (handicap 12) played in second position and lost 18-26 to Jenny Prescott (handicap 16), making the score heading into the doubles one win each with Drouin scoring 41 hoops to Bairnsdale’s 38.

Holding a marginal lead of three hoops, the Drouin pairing went on to win the doubles 23-20 after coming from behind, with Allan Leesing again eclipsing the opposition in his final turn.

Result: Drouin two games, 64 hoops defeated Bairnsdale one game, 58 hoops.

It completed a satisfying season for the Drouin club, who resumed competitio­n in Gippsland Croquet Associatio­n associatio­n pennant after many years of lapse.

After finishing mid-field on the ladder, the club looks forward to next year’s competitio­n.
