National squad for Taylah Gilliam

- By Carolyn Turner

Warragul basketballer Taylah Gilliam has been selected to the Womens National Basketball League squad team Dandenong Rangers.

Taylah has signed a threeyear contract with Rangers. She played her first game at the Traralgon Sports Stadium two weeks ago soundly defeating Adelaide Lightning. But the tables were turned on the weekend when Lightning beat the Rangers at Dandenong.

Taylah, who plays guard, is part of the 12-person squad which will play home games, while a 10-person squad makes up the away team.

Taylah played a great debut season for Rangers last year as part of the SEABL season.

Taylah’s basketball journey began in Warragul where she played with Chalkies before moving into the Warragul Warriors squad team.

She went on to be picked in the Victorian Junior Basketball League team playing with Nunawading.

She is currently studying bio medical science at ACU where she is in the elite sports program allowing her to study as well as undertake basketball training.

In announcing her appointment, Rangers head coach Larissa Anderson said

Taylah had a strong work ethic.

Quick with the ball and a strong outside shooter, Taylah’s quick development has surprised many people within the organisation, a testament to her hard work on the training track.

Larissa said Taylah’s driven attitude was very apparent during the WNBL preseason so far,

“Taylah is an absolute pleasure to work with,” she said.

“Taylah is such an exciting talent, she has taken the tougher road to get here and I love her ‘never give up’ attitude,”

“After a great SEABL debut season, we are only just seeing the start of what Tay is capable of and I am very much looking forward to watching and being a part of her development in the coming months at the Jayco Rangers,” Larissa said.

Taylah said basketball had always been her preferred sport.

“I like the technicality of the sport, the intensity of scoring, the defensive nature of the game and the great team environment.

“It is a great team of coaching staff and a great bunch of girls,” she said.
