Warragul win two straight

Warragul Bowling Club had a good day in round nine of WGBD pennant on Saturday, with two teams winning.

The top team made it two wins in a row with a 28-shot win over Newborough, while the second team lost by 42 shots to ladder leaders Traralgon.

Division three bounced back from its big loss with a good win over Yinnar, whilst division five got thumped by RSL.

Division two: Warragul Newborough (2) 109/81.

David Alderman, Janette Gallasch, John Vickerman and Graeme Davis lost to John Leicester’s team 17/20. Luke Ward, Des Stephens, Peter Gallasch and Clive Padgham defeated Bob Goldie’s team 32/18. Ian Belling, Necip Akarsu, Jim Power and Ken Scammell defeated Charlie Ward’s team 33/19. Ken Landman, Pat Hammond, Paul Simmons and Bill Clappers defeated Jim Cuthbertso­n’s team 27/24.

Division two: Warragul (2) lost to Traralgon (2) 60/102.

Ron Collins, Roy Hammond, Bob Currie and Peter Wood lost to Geoff Cole’s team 16/23. Keith Wilkins, Brian Barby, David Ferguson and David Smith lost to Graham Cross’ team 12/24. Lester Mason, Ken Brown, Shirley Melsen and David Gatewood lost to Kay Garry’s team 15/27. Kerrie Currie, Alan McDonnell, Matt Smith and Jim Moyle lost to Bill Bishop’s team 17/28.

Division three: Warragul (3) defeated Yinnar 102/82.

Ted Holland, May Baldwin, Eric Porter and Elsie Hefford lost to Wayne Harris’ team 23/25. John Bell, Vin Roche, Matt Draisma and Fred Pitcher defeated Tim Roche’s team 35/17. Gabrielle Draisma, Graham Cobban, Chris Wilkins and Mike Cousens defeated Murray Delahay’s team 25/18. Freda Lay, Darren McDonald, Brian Kennedy and Ray Headspeath lost to Tom Shore’s team 19/22. Division five: Warragul (4) lost to Traralgon RSL (3) 37/114.

Patrick McGowan, Barbara Maloni, Barry Downer and Bill Clark lost to F. Metcalf’s team 8/51. Michael Royce, Glynnis Mitchell, Marg Keeffe and Greg Mitchell lost to D. McClare’s team 18/25. Wilf Boscombe, Trevor Crofts, Bill Dye and Alan Potter lost to J. Ward’s team 11/38.

In round 10 of WGBD pennant on Saturday, Warragul one is home to Garfield, Warragul two is away to Newborough two, Warragul three is home to Boolarra and Warragul four is away to Garfield two.

The final of the men’s championsh­ip pairs was played on Sunday with David and Matt Smith versus Des Stephens and John Vickerman.

The Smiths got off to a good start, with six shots on the first three ends, before Des and John got four on the next three.

The teams traded blows for the next five ends and David and Matt led 9/8. They strung three ends together after that to lead 14/8 with four ends to go.

Des and John got one on the next, before David and Matt got ones on the 16th and 17th ends to take an almost unbeatable 16/9 lead.

Des and John got one shot on the last end, but David and Matt bowled better on the day and thoroughly deserved their win.

They become the first father/son combinatio­n to win the event.

The final of the men’s singles between Steve Pallot and David Gatewood will be played next Sunday at 10am.

The women’s final between Elsie Hefford and Shirley Melsen will take place at the same time.

Following those finals, the men’s B grade final will be played at about 1pm between Roy Hammond and Brian Kennedy.
