AEC is wrong

-

Like so many others, recently I received a letter from the Australian Electoral Commission stating that I would now be in the Federal seat of Monash.

The part that I didn’t understand was that my current local member Russell Broadbent would remain representing me.

I am not sure that he represents the electorate and has done so for a while. He represents a political party first and foremost and even when given a free vote by his party on the Same Sex Marriage Bill, he chose to go against 62 per cent of his electorate and vote ‘No’.

He, like the rest of his party, failed to support a Royal Commission into the banking and financial sector for two years. He has supported a belief that trickle-down economics works.

The economy may be booming, but there has been very little wage growth for workers who are struggling to make ends meet. And if the economy is booming, why are we not paying down our debt that our local member’s government has nearly tripled in the last six years?

He belongs to a party that has dithered and at times denied global warming, leading to a meaningless and non-existent combined emissions and energy policy.

In a time when cheaper renewables are available and battery technology is improving, his party advocates for coal.

His government believes and practises a policy of keeping people in indefinite offshore detention even though they are refugees. This is done as a deterrent to people smugglers but displays a lack of compassion and humanity to fellow human beings.

The AEC may be right in renaming the electorate Monash but as far as my local member representing me, I am happy to argue the case that they have got that bit wrong.
