Arcade games made at Yarragon
A young American student has inspired Yarragon Primary School’s grade 5/6 students to create and code their own arcade style video games.
Then nine-year-old Caine Monroy created a cardboard arcade made out of boxes and everyday objects and ran it out of his father’s used auto parts store in Los Angeles during mid-2011.
Documentary film maker Nirvan Mullick became Caine’s first customer after unexpectedly coming across the arcade while getting a door-handle for his car. Inspired by Caine’s level of commitment, work, and thought he had put into the project, Mr Mullick made the documentary Caine’s Arcade which has seen his story go viral.
The positive response inspired Mr Mullick and his team to start the Imagination Foundation, a non-profit organisation aimed at fostering creativity and entrepreneurship in more children across the world.
Yarragon Primary School teacher Michaela Davies said while some students chose to use pre-existing games, most had picked their own to satisfy their own interests.
Students completed their arcade games from start to finish from identifying a theme, to designing and coding their arcade game through online program Scratch.
The project concluded on Friday last week with the grade 5/6 students showing off their games and inviting other students to play them while keeping score and handing out tickets.
